SJS Launches Fund Raising Campaign! Also Calling for Alumni Nominations.

Batavia, NY – St. Joseph Catholic School is pleased to announce the establishment of the All Apostles’ Society, an annual giving society aimed at creating sustainability for the school. Alumni Tom and Jean Lichtenthal have agreed to act as honorary co-chairs for the campaign, which hopes to raise $50,000 by the end of the year.

With the closing of Holy Family School in Le Roy last year, the school has swelled to 300 students from 14 school districts and four different counties. While enrollment remains strong, school officials would like to guarentee the school remains viable for years to come. Principal Karen Green believes the time is right for the school to kick off this initiative.

“We have tremendous support from the church, our families and staff, and the community at large but we want to take steps now to ensure that St. Joe’s will be a vibrant part of the community for years to come,” Green said.

The campaign will be led by Development Director Chad Zambito and supported by the school’s advisory committee including Bryan Winters, a former Holy Family supporter that has made the transition to St Joe’s.

“It was difficult for us to witness the closing of Holy Family but we are very happy with St. Joe’s and want to make sure that parents in Genesee County and the region have an option to provide a Catholic education for their children,” Winters said.

The Lichtenthals both attended St. Joe’s and sent their three children to the school as well.

“St. Joe’s teaches so much more than academics, it gives these children a solid foundation of knowledge, morals and values that they can build on for the rest of their life," Tom said. “We have been involved in committees and fundraisers in the past and are looking forward to helping the school take another step toward sustainability.”

The campaign will kick off with a reception at T.F. Brown’s in Batavia on Aug. 22.

Meanwhile, officials have announced that the 54th annual Popcorn Ball will be held on Oct. 26 and will feature a “Corks and Forks” theme. Nominations are now being accepted for Outstanding Alumni awards.

The Newest Sports Craze at Darien Lakes State Park -- Disc Golf!

Think of traditional golf -- but with Frisbees. There, you have disc golf! If throwing is not your forte (like myself), the course may seem intimidating -- but don’t let that deter you from trying it out at Darien Lakes State Park’s beautiful 18-hole Angry Apple Disc Golf Course.

The object of disc golf, much like traditional, is to “complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes” (or throws in this case), according to the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). There are even specific discs like there are golf clubs! You start from a tee area and aim for the target  an elevated metal basket. At Darien Lakes, the course winds through an old apple orchard and wooded hills, presenting quite a fun challenge for players. 

Also known as Frisbee golf, disc golf is a great way to spend time outside with family or friends. Kids to seniors can be seen on the course, which starts just behind the contact station at the entrance to the park. There are three separate tees to accommodate all levels of expertise, so everyone can participate!

Doug Kelly, park manager at Darien Lakes, brought the sport to the park over a year ago, to much success. He knew the park had the perfect land and setup for a disc golf course. Professional golfers and amateurs have visited the park solely to try the course. 

“The sport has a fairly easy learning curve so you can get proficient rather quickly,” Kelly said. “The idea for the course was to create a fun design that would cater both to experienced golfers and those who are just being introduced to the sport. It’s a great way to spend a few hours relaxing while playing at your own pace.”

Disc golf actually has a local connection! In 1970, a group of people from Rochester had been playing disc golf with tournaments and leagues -- they even had a championship event by 1972. The next year, they discovered the International Frisbee Association and turned their championship event into a national one -- the American Flying Disc Open. From there, disc golf was incorporated as an event in the World Frisbee Championship, and then the PDGA was formed. 

The course is open year-round (yes, if you are feeling adventurous, you can play in the winter!) The park will soon be renting and selling discs for use on the course, but keep in mind that there is a lot of foliage surrounding the course and you don’t want to lose your disc! 

Players get to see a secluded part of the park, which is both serene and scenic, while getting in some exercise and relaxation. Visit Darien Lakes' hidden treasure and see what this up-and-coming sport is all about!

Frost Ridge, Where the Fun is!

Tonight Sports Q TV will be at City Slickers filming their sports-center-style show! It's your chance to meet your favorite Buffalo Bills players and as many as 30 players could be there. The party starts at 9:30 p.m. and includes two djs -- DJ Macy Paradise and DJ Konda. The event is for ages 18+ to party, 21+ to drink and sponsored by Mancuso Limo and The Batavian.

Bills gear is encouraged and the restaurant will be open at 4 p.m. for dinner. Due to contractual agreements, player names can't be announced, however several rookies and starters are expected to be in attendance. 

City Slickers has also posted a flier on www.facebook.com/cityslickersbar, which can be printed out and for every flier turned in during the event, $2 will be donated to the Sheldon family in Bergen. Derek Sheldon was killed in Le Roy yesterday in a motorcycle accident.

Oakfield Fitness and Cross-Training Center has expanded to include a fully appointed cross-training room with dumbbells, squat racks, wall balls, ropes, step-up boxes and other training devices.

There is an experienced cross-trainer providing assistance and training Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6 to 8 a.m.

The gym is fully equipped with a weight room including dumbbells, free weights and universal machines and a cardio area with treadmills, bikes and rowing machines.

The monthly fee for the weight room and cardio area is $30. To use the cross-training room is an additional $30 a month (total, $60 a month).

There's no sign-up fee.

The gym is open to members 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

High Voltage Tattoo has added an additional tattoo booth and another artist.

In response to increasing business, we at High Voltage Tattoo and Piercing have added another tattoo booth and hired another artist. For most of 2013 all of the tattoo artists at the shop have been booked in advance with appointments, so we have rarely been able to accommodate walk-ins. Hopefully with an additional new workspace and another tattoo artist, we will be able to get more walk-ins into a chair.

Jeremy is the latest artist to join the High Voltage crew. Jeremy tattooed in Buffalo for six years and has recently moved to Batavia. We now have five people working full time to better meet the needs of our customers.
