Nineteen local residents named to RIT dean's list

The following students were named to the Dean's List at Rochester Institute of Technology for the spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. 

Full-time degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for Dean's List if their term GPA is greater than or equal to 3.400; they do not have any grades of "Incomplete", "D" or "F"; and they have registered for, and completed, at least 12 credit hours.

Nine local residents graduate from RIT

Rochester Institute of Technology conferred nearly 4,500 degrees at all of its campuses in the 2023-2024 academic year.

RIT's academic convocation celebration was held in May and featured remarks by Patricia "Pattie" Moore, a distinguished designer and trailblazing alumna of the class of 1974.

The following local residents received degrees:

  • Alec Wagner of Batavia received a BS in electrical engineering technology.
  • Taylor Schofield of Pavilion received a BS in biomedical engineering and MS in science, technology, and public policy.
  • Isaac Ladley of Byron received a BS in supply chain management.

  • Tanner Richardson of Batavia received a BS in electrical engineering.

Batavia High School honors 101 students at annual awards ceremony

The Batavia City School District is proud to acknowledge the Batavia High School students who received awards and recognition at our recent 2023-2024 BHS Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 13, at the Frank E. Owen Auditorium at Batavia High School.

"I am incredibly proud to congratulate our BHS students on their outstanding achievements this year," said BHS Principal Jennifer Wesp. “Their hard work, dedication, and perseverance have truly paid off, and it is an honor to see them recognized. To our seniors, the Class of 2024 - you have reached a significant milestone, and we hope these achievements serve as a catalyst for your future success. Congratulations again to all our students!"

101 students were honored at the event, with our seniors receiving a combined $83,725 in monetary awards and scholarships. Members of the junior and sophomore classes were also recognized with non-monetary awards.

SUNY Potsdam athlete Nathan Yauchzee named to SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for 2023-24 season

Nathan Yauchzee, a resident of Le Roy was one of 141 SUNY Potsdam student-athletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for the 2023-24 school year, the conference announced.

Yauchzee is a freshman member of the SUNY Potsdam Men's Track and Field team and a Music Business major. Athletes named to the academic honor roll had a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA for the year.

SUNY Cortland announces 6 local students to its spring 2024 dean's list

There were 2,434 SUNY Cortland students recognized for academic excellence on the university's Dean's List for the Spring 2024 semester.

The Dean's List is the highest ranking for undergraduate students in their respective academic areas of the university. Students must earn a minimum 3.3 grade point average for the semester to make the list.

Each of SUNY Cortland's three schools publishes its own Dean's List. They are the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Professional Studies and the School of Education.

UB named 4,000 students named to its spring 2024 dean's list.

To qualify for the dean's list, full-time undergraduate students must demonstrate academic excellence by earning a grade point average of at least 3.600 while completing a minimum of 15 or more UB credit hours, of which 12 are graded (A-F) credits. Students are named to the dean's list at the end of the fall and spring semesters.

UAlbany recognizes 4 local students for the Spring 2024 dean's list

The University at Albany is celebrating students for the Spring 2024 Dean's List.

The Dean's List at UAlbany recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of full-time undergraduate students.

To qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or higher in their first semester of study and a GPA of 3.50 or higher in subsequent semesters.

Leah Filter of Corfu named to University of Alabama Spring 2024 deans list

Leah Filter was named to The University of Alabama Deans List for the spring semester 2024. 

A total of 13,103 students enrolled during Spring Semester 2024 at The University of Alabama were named to the dean's list with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the president's list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A's). These driven students are making waves across UA's more than 70 undergraduate programs.

The UA dean's and president's lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.

Retired Educators’ Association honors scholarship winners at annual luncheon

The Genesee County Retired Educators’ Association held its annual spring luncheon meeting at Byron Presbyterian Church. Members attending were treated to a delicious lunch prepared by members of the church.

After lunch, the winners of two $500 scholarships awarded by the GCREA were introduced. The scholarships are given to high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in education or to people who are already students in an education program at an institution of higher learning. 

The winners for this year are Alexandra Manley and Emily Rowe.

Alexandra is a senior at Elba Central School. She will attend Nazareth University in the fall, studying to become a music teacher. Emily is currently a student at SUNY Geneseo in the Childhood with Special Education program. Congratulations to both winners!

After the conclusion of the awards, Dan Lyon from Lifespan presented a program to attendees titled “Name That Scam.” In a fun, game-themed presentation Dan introduced many scams that senior citizens have been victimized by. He provided a great deal of valuable information in the presentation and provided flyers and pamphlets to help our members avoid falling victim to a scam.

After the program, a short meeting was held. Changes in the bylaws were approved, and officers were elected.

One of GCREA’s missions is to assist the community. A collection of personal care, laundry, and cleaning items and a monetary collection was taken. These will be donated to Community Action of Genesee County.

Three local SUNY Potsdam students named to president's list

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 727 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Spring 2024 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by President Dr. Suzanne Smith.

To achieve the honor of being on the President's List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

The students included:

SUNY Cortland announces Spring 2024 president's list

There are 710 SUNY Cortland students who earned President's List honors for the Spring 2024 semester. To qualify for the President's List, students must earn a grade of A- or better in each of their classes while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

Mason Randall of Batavia receives degree from American International College during 139th commencement ceremony

Mason Randall of Batavia has graduated from American International College (AIC) with a Bachelor of Science in the Criminal Justice program.

On Saturday, May 11, the College conferred degrees to more than 600 graduates receiving bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degrees from its School of Health Sciences, School of Education, and School of Business, Arts, and Sciences.

In her remarks, the College's Interim President Nicolle Cestero told the class of 2024 that their time at AIC was formative. "Each of you has overcome challenges, pursued passions and you have grown in ways you might not have imagined when you first stepped foot on campus," she told the graduates. "As you stand ready to begin your next journey, know that life is full of possibilities just waiting for you."

Keynote speaker Michael D. Smith - the CEO of AmeriCorps - regaled graduates, their families, and AIC faculty and staff with stories from his youth, growing up in the McKnight neighborhood of Springfield. Smith spoke of how being part of a community at the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield planted the seeds for his future in which he leads the country's largest public volunteer force.

Smith, who received an honorary doctorate from AIC during the ceremony, told the graduates they were not unlike him. "My story might be yours, too. People see you but they don't always see your struggles. But AIC wanted you because they knew what some saw as hurdles, you are going to use as springboards."

The ceremony saw 216 bachelor's degrees, 279 master's, 72 certificates of graduate study, and thirty-six doctorates awarded.

The Town & Country Garden Club of Le Roy is pleased to announce that the recipient of the club's 2024 Scholarship is Rachel Smith, LeRoy Junior Senior High School Class of 2024. The Club’s Scholarship Committee selected Rachel to receive the scholarship based on her scholastic achievements and volunteer service relating to preserving the environment.

“The committee was impressed by Rachel’s involvement in roadside cleanup, cemetery restoration, and recycling projects that started while she was still in grade school,” said Lucy MacKenzie, Scholarship Committee Chair.

Rachel’s interest in the environment was fostered by family outings to nearby gardens and state parks. Rachel gives credit to family friend and Garden Club member Lana Bradbury who, with her late husband Jack, shared appreciation for nature through wildflower study and bird watching. Rachel will attend R.I.T. to study in the field of Bio-Med Sciences and plans to
participate in environmental activities sponsored by the school.

Bergen's Chambry named to spring 2024 dean's list at Mount Union

The University of Mount Union has announced that Zoey Chambry, of Bergen, New York, has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2024 semester.

Chambry was one of 691 students named to the Dean's List. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of traditionally graded coursework while achieving a grade point average of 3.550 or better with no letter grade below a B.

Ellie Dambra of Le Roy named to James Madison University president's list

Le Roy resident Ellie Dambra has been named to the President's List at James Madison University for the spring 2024 semester. 

Students who earn president's list honors must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.900 or above. Dambra is majoring in Public Administration - BS.
