Obituaries

Mary Ann Kutter (nee Vohwinkel) passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at home in the presence of her husband and children after a brief illness with cancer. She was born on April 29, 1932 in Buffalo, New York to the late Henry and Margaret Vohwinkel and was a life-long resident of Western New York. Mary Ann graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Amherst, NY. She was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her husband, Richard L., was a loving mother to six children, Joan Miner (late Joseph), Theresa (Dean) Russell, Richard W. (Faith), Robert (Lisa), Michael and Timothy (Jennifer), was blessed with nine grandchildren, Daniel, Ashley, Evan, Sara, Megan, Mara, Eric, Noah, Dianna and five great grandchildren. 

Mary Ann was a bookkeeper at Kutter's Cheese Factory for many years and was a member of the Pembroke School Board in the early 70's. She was also a volunteer at Crossroads House Hospice program and St. Luke's City Mission for several years. 

One of the hobbies Mary Ann enjoyed was crocheting, making many afgans and doilies for family and friends in addition to making hats and scarfs for various non-profit organizations. She also enjoyed gardening and doing daily Wonder Word puzzles. She was an avid Buffalo Bills football fan dating back to the early 1960's, she liked liked watching and attending games along with watching University of Notre Dame football. Traveling was another favorite activity and she visited such places as Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, the Czech Republic and the Virgin Islands. As her children were growing up, she loved camping in many areas of the United States. Mary Ann had a beautiful singing voice and passed her love of music and theatre to her children. 

There are no prior calling hours. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church at the convenience of her family. She will be laid to rest at the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Crittenden, NY. Memorials can be made to St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, Crossroads House or Homecare & Hospice in Batavia, NY. Donald A. “Magoo” Suozzi , 86, of Batavia passed away unexpectedly on December 4, 2020 at the NYS Veterans Home in Batavia where he was receiving short term rehabilitative care. He was born in Batavia in 1934 to Daniel and Jenny Teresi Suozzi. Don was fortunate to be raised by his father “Danny Boy” and his loving Uncle Joe Teresi after his Mother’s untimely death. His Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins meant the world to him throughout his life.

Early on Don “Magoo” was the co-owner and operator (along with his Uncle Joe) of the New Hamilton Hotel. The people he met there gave him a lot of colorful material for the stories he enjoyed telling his family and friends. After the closing of the hotel, Don began a career as a car salesman. He worked for Charlie Mancuso at both Cousins and Mancuso Motors in Batavia. To this day people still say “He sold me my first car!” 

In his retirement years Don could be seen at Daily Morning Mass at Ascension Parish, McDonald’s for coffee and at Southside Deli to get his lottery tickets. As of late, his best friend Sootie had become his chauffeur. 

Don was loved dearly by his wife Rosemarie (Natolie) and three daughters; Donna Suozzi, Jacqueline (Thomas Balestra) Suozzi and Janice Della Penna and her cherished daughters; Papa’s World -Danielle Jo and Gabrielle Rose Della Penna. Also surviving are Don’s brother-in- law and sister-in-law Robert and Carol Frongetta along with their two sons Michael and Mark Frongetta  and their families.

The three most important things to Don were Faith, Family and Friends. Please remember Don in prayer and memorable stories.

Services will be held privately and He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s cemetery.

Martin Burshtynsky, 92, of Batavia, NY, formerly of Buffalo, Attica, Warsaw and Lockport, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

He is predeceased by his wife Alice (Lensky) Burshtynsky who died in 2004.

Martin is survived by his four children, Mark (Loma), Roberta “Bobbi/Bert” (Fran) Norton, Joy (Bill) Hume, and Linda (Larry) Bartlett. His grandchildren David (fiance’ Felicia Horton), Mark, Jr. (Jackie), Amanda Burshtynsky, Greg (Jill), Kristie Norton (fiance’ Christopher Paonessa), Lindsay (Jeff) Johnson, Brian (Danielle) Gardner, Larry (Ashley) Bartlett, and Burgundy (Mike) Maurer. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.

Martin was a veteran having served proudly in the Korean War. Marty loved the people at Havenwood Apartments and the NYS Veterans Home in Batavia, staff and residents alike. He loved socializing and telling stories to his friends and family. Marty spent years camping all over WNY with family. He loved the outdoors. Marty was a member of several Veteran Posts, including Post #624 Joseph Hriczko in Buffalo, Post #2535 in Lockport, Glenn S. Loomis NY Post #332 in Batavia, Post #532-Warsaw, VFW Post #6239-Alexander and many other various Lions, Legions, and Eagles Clubs.

It was Marty’s dream to be laid to rest in the WNY National Cemetery in Pembroke. With the long awaited opening of the Cemetery, Marty’s dream will be fulfilled. Private services for Martin Burshtynsky will be held for his immediate family.

Pavilion ~ Paul T. Walton, age 79, passed away early Saturday morning (December 5, 2020) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

     He was born July 14, 1941 in Warsaw, a son of the late Stanley and Jennie Walton.

     Paul will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who loved spending time with his grandchildren.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing cards.

     He will be sadly missed by his sons, Michael (MaryEllen) Walton of MI and Richard (Rebecca) Walton of Geneseo; stepchildren, Frank (Paula) Miller III, Jon (Cheryle) Miller, Helen (Jeffrey) Cunningham, David (Deanne) Miller, Caroline (Joshua) McAda, Nanette (Michael) Chiulli, Michelle (Thomas) Sherman and Michael (Amy) Miller; siblings, Bill (Sue) Walton of Pavilion, Agnes Park of Pavilion, Joan (Gary) Kobus of Webster and Joyce Jacobus of LeRoy; sister-in-law, Chris Walton; grandchildren, Mikayla, Mitchell, Michael, Morgan, Elizabeth and Benjamin, along with several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     He was predeceased by his wife of 24 years, Alison Gordon Walton; brothers, David Walton and Jim Walton and his brothers-in-law, Jack Park and John Jacobus.

     Services will be private at the convenience of the family, however a public Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date to be announced.

LeRoy ~ Samuel J. Maloni, age 81, formerly of West Main Street Road, passed away Friday afternoon (December 4, 2020) at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

     He was born January 27, 1939 in Batavia, a son of the late Nunzio and Stella Macugowski Maloni.

     Sam will be remembered as a very kind and caring man, who loved to cook and bake.  He was known for delicious pizzas out of the LB Grand in LeRoy.  Growing up, Sam was a member of St. Joseph's Church and worked from time to time at his aunt Jenny Malone's grocery store on Bacon Street.  He went on to work for the Pembroke Central School District as a special education teacher and retired with 33 years of dedicated service.  He enjoyed attending the various luncheons and gatheringss with his retired teacher friends over the years.  He was also an avid horseracing fan.

     He is survived by his brother-in-law, Ronald Piazza; sister-in-law, Cindy Maloni; special great-niece, Nicolena; special great-nephew, Nathan, along with many other loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis "Dolly" Piazza, brother, Joseph Maloni and nephews, Joseph Jr., John and Nicholas.

     Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Robert U. Tanner, 81 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Thursday (December 3, 2020) at the New York State Veterans Home.

He was born February 10, 1939 in Homer City, PA, a son of the late Harry Samuel Tanner and Mable Mae Moore Tanner. He is preceded in death by a brother Harry Tanner.

Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren and was infamous for bringing candy bars to them. He was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and loved watching the Pirates, Sabres and the Army/Navy games. Bob was a four year Veteran of the US Navy, serving as a Signalman on the USS Independence during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from Batavia Metal Products where he worked for 35 years, often times holding down a second job to provide for his family. He will be remembered most for his affectionate term, “I love you two bush”.

Bob is the husband of Ethel Kelly Tanner whom he married on January 6, 1962. Surviving along with his wife are his children, Ginny Leanen (Ron Trumble) of LeRoy, Terry (Michael) Freeman of Oak Ridge, TN, Kimberly (Raymond) DiPasquale of Conesus, Kelly (Steven) Mountain of Batavia and Steven (Leslie) Tanner of Batavia. Grandchildren, Jennifer (Billy) Gannon of Brockport, Karl (Dawn) Leanen of LeRoy, Christopher (Lacey) Freeman of TN, Robert Freeman of TN, Aimee Freeman of FL, Andrew Freeman of TN, Ryan (Robin Quataert) DiPasquale of Kent, NY, Brandon DiPasquale of CA, Chelsea Mountain of Lancaster, Melissa Mountain, Tanner Mountain, Scott Tanner and Rhys Tanner, all of Batavia. Also surviving are six great grandchildren, sister Patricia Schmitt of AZ and sister in-law, Donna Tanner of AZ.

Mark Lewis Phillips, 71 of Varysburg, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. He was born on September 21, 1949 in Dunkirk to the late William W. (Arlene Koske) Phillips. He is preceded in death by dearest brother William W. Phillips Jr.  

Mr. Phillips proudly served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He worked for many years at the United States Post Office in Buffalo.

Beloved husband of Karen (Opoka) Phillips, devoted father of Heather (David Mazur) Phillips, Derek (Rose) Phillips, Mark Teddy (Nicki Pierce) Phillips, loving grandfather of Jake Phillips, Hayden, McKenna and Brooklyn.

He will be laid to rest at Western New York National Cemetery, Pembroke.

  Virginia (Ginny) P. Wolfe, age 87 of Gilbert, Arizona and formerly of Perry passed away on Monday November 30, 2020 at the Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, Az.
She was born on January 16, 1933 in Medina, NY a daughter to the late Anthony and Pauline (Kawaleski) Kozielski. Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth who passed away in 1993, sister: Irence Musso and 3 brothers: Stanley, Anthony and Edward Kozielski.

She attended Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of Medina High School, Class of 1951. She and her husband Kenneth C. Wolfe move to Pike in 1953 where they resided until 1960. They then moved to S. Warsaw and in 1962 move to Perry.  Ginny worked in several of the area restaurants. She was also and EMT with the Perry Ambulance in the early 1970’s. She loved to write poetry and play the guitar. She was a member of the St. Isidore Catholic Parish in Perry.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Judith (Dominic) Foanio of Gilbert, AZ, Desiree Wolfe of Penfield, 3 sons: Kenneth Jr. of Holley, Christopher of Palmyra, Ricky of Perry, 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Harold Eugene Merle, 82, of Attica, passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020 at Wyoming County Community Hospital. He was born in Attica, NY on May 4, 1938, the son of Floyd and Helen Merle.

Surviving are his loving wife Phyllis Welker Merle; Children, Jeffrey (Pandora) Merle, of Sebring, FL; Joan (Don) Dylag of Corfu, NY; and Douglas Merle (Glenda Shervin) of Johnsonburg, NY. Grandchildren, Donald Dylag, Jr., (Danielle Kellogg) Katherine (Kyle) Schoff, Douglas Merle, Jr., Carley Dylag(Andrew Riztman), Great grandchildren; Lilian & Noah Schoff.  Step grandchildren; Lorenzo Simmons, Tom, Josh, & Hannah Shervin. And many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by his brother, Robert & Wife Rose Merle; brother Kenneth Merle and sister-in-law Lois Witkowski.  Step-grandaughter Pamela (Punkin) Simmons.

Harold enjoyed a long retirement after a career with New York State Department of Corrections and at Lapp Insulator.

He was a past member of the Odd Fellows, and an active Masonic Lodge member. He also served for many years on the Forest Hill Cemetery board.

Harold was the guy who could make friends in a strange crowd, he could sing, whistle and hum a tune, play the piano, drive a golf ball, hit a bullseye free standing, fly an airplane, and if it was broke he could fix it. He always kept busy puttering around his home.

Gary Vernon McWethy, age 81, a creative and gentle soul, died peacefully at United Memorial Medical Center on December1, 2020.

Gary was born in Stafford, New York on January 12, 1939 to Vernon L McWethy and Gertrude (Trudy) Sheffer McWethy.  In 1944, his family moved from Stafford to a farm on South Main Street Road, Batavia, NY where Gary treasured his surroundings for the rest of his life.

Gary's vision for design and construction started at the age of eighteen when he built his first home in Linden, NY.  After graduating from Batavia High School in 1957, he attended RIT where he studied design and architecture. Gary served in the Army Reserve, worked for Rumsey & Petronio Construction Company.  Gary's dream of owning and operating his own construction company became a reality when McWethy Construction Company was formed.  Later, McWethy Construction Company took part in the completion of the Genesee Country Mall. Gary, with his brother Wayne and good friend Dick Bausch created Devil’s Rock Bar and Lounge. This was a favorite place enjoyed by both owners and customers alike.  He then became partners in in the DVM Corporation with Dominic Valle, Sr. and John DeWitt.  A lifelong goal of Gary's was achieved with the planning and development of Meadowbrook Estates on his family's land and surrounding farms in 1985.   The first homeowner in Meadowbrook Estates was Gary May. The project expanded over time to include the Meadowbrook Golf Course which opened in 1996 and a five star AirBnB which opened in June, 2018. His personal love of the Adirondack Mountains which inspired the theme of the entire home. There, Gary treasured his conversations with guests from all over the world.

Early in life, as a member of the Stafford Hunting Club, Gary fell in love with the Adirondack Mountains while hunting and camping with his grandfather, father and later with his children, grandchildren and nephews.  Family and friends recall that Gary could also be a prankster and full of fun.  It would not be unusual while camping at Cranberry Lake to wake up in the night to scary sounds only to find in the morning that Gary created the noise by tying tin cans to a string. 

Throughout his life, Gary was generous with his time. He graciously acted as a consultant to family members on numerous carpentry and home projects.  Along with travel and skiing, Gary enjoyed boating in the Finger Lakes area.  For many years, Gary hosted numerous pool parties for family, friends, his employees as well as the traditional family breakfast at Christmas.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Wayne and grandson Eric. 

Gary is survived by his loving sons, Mark and Randy, their Mother Barbara McWethy, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sisters Sharon McWethy and Marcia McWethy and her husband Jeff Singer along with several cousins.

Danny Lee Williams, 59 of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday (December 2, 2020).

He was born April 13, 1961 in Batavia, NY, son of the late C.J. Williams and Rosa Hatcher Williams.

Danny graduated from Batavia High School and served with the National Guard. He was employed by Kodak in Rochester and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears. Most of all, he loved his children more than anything and enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include his children, Danny Williams Jr and Carolena Williams. Sister, Carolyn G. Williams of Florida, Lennon B. Williams of Batavia and Eric P. Williams of Batavia. Also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his two sisters, Angelia C. Williams and Sharon N. Williams.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Peter E. Reynolds, 81 of Attica, died Saturday, November 28, 2020 of complications from COViD-19. He was born in Auburn, NY the youngest son of the late Hobart (Frances Thomas) Reynolds. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert “Fluff” Reynolds and Richard “Dick” Reynolds, sister-in-law Jean Reynolds, niece Susan Neeley and nephew John Reynolds.    

Pete was a proud American and served in the United States Army. He was a past president of the American Legion Harder-O’Donnell Post No 734 in Attica. He retired as a 3^rd generation Corrections Officer from NYSDOC with 30 years of service working at Sing Sing, Attica and Wyoming Correctional Facilities.

Pete was an accomplished golfer for 69 years and past member of the Attica Golf Club. He had a deep passion for his model railroad and assembling model military vehicles, he has donated a display at the Medina Railroad Museum. Pete was also a member of Attica Heraldaires Drum Corps.  

Peter is survived by his sons Jeffrey Reynolds, Peter (Eva) Reynolds, grandchildren Christopher Reynolds, Chelsea (Ryan) Peyman, Kristina (Andrew) Atchinson and Elle Reynolds, sister-in-law Joan Reynolds, nephews James and Joseph Reynolds, niece Shelagh Cacioppo and Robert Neeley and his daughter Shelagh; two great-grandsons Ryan and Evan Peyman.

There will be no prior calling hours. A Celebration of Pete’s Life will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica.

Douglas L. Sprung, 64 of LeRoy, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2020. He was born on April 1, 1956 in Batavia to the late Clayton Sprung and Grace Ann (Bob) Sullivan of Stafford. He is preceded in death by a brother Donald Sprung.

Mr. Sprung worked for Torrey Farms Inc. He was an avid outdoorsman that loved to hunt deer and coyotes with his closest friends.

Doug is survived by his daughter Kristine (Richard) Bly of Buffalo; brother Daniel (Mary) Sprung of FL; Lucinda Smith of Pembroke; two grandchildren and a niece Nicole (Tom) Brown.

Oakfield - Carol S. Speed, 73 of Oakfield,  passed away on Tuesday, (December 1, 2020) at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Batavia in Batavia.

Mrs. Speed was born January 21, 1947 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Cecil Compton and Alice (Ross) Compton.

Carol attended Oakfield-Alabama Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing piano and organ and played for many churches over the years.  She was a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed spending time with church kids.  Mrs. Speed liked to camp and ride in the boat while her husband fished.

Carol is the wife of Wayne Speed of Oakfield.  The two were married on April 26, 1969.

Surviving along with her husband are her children, Pastor Jonathan (Kimberly) Speed of Azle, Texas, and Julie (Trevor) Peterson of Columbia, Maryland; grandchildren, Veronica Speed, Samantha (Rory) Cox, Charles, Jonathan, and Susannah Speed, Ian and Jenna Peterson; a brother, James (Sandy) Compton of Bethany; a sister-in-law, Grace Compton of Varysburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Carol is preceded in death by her brothers, Richard and Philip Compton.

There will be no visitation. A private service will be held for Carol at Oakfield-Alabama Baptist Church followed by burial in Cary Cemetery in Oakfield.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Carol's name to the Oakfield-Alabama Baptist Church, 2210 Judge Road, Oakfield, New York 14125.
