There were 12 people last week who correctly concluded that Tony Romo would develop a rubber arm and toss the most interceptions. Romo turned the ball over four times. Among those 12 contest participants, we randomly selected Larry Wooster as the prize winner.

As you know, here at The Batavian, we're always encouraging local residents to support local businesses. We especially like programs that help connect local shoppers with their neighborhood shops.

A couple of months ago, some friends in the online news business showed us a new smartphone and tablet app that is aimed at rewarding local shoppers for patronizing local businesses.

It's called Zebra Reach.

We're all familiar with loyalty cards -- buy five lunches, get the sixth free, buy nine books get the 10th free. A lot of businesses run these sort of programs, but they usually come with flimsy paper punch cards that either get lost or crammed in your wallet with a dozen other cards.

Zebra Reach makes loyalty reward programs digital and easier to use -- one app stores all of your purchase points for multiple participating businesses.

For the past couple of weeks, Lisa Ace has been busy asking a bunch of local businesses to participate. We wanted to make sure that when you first learned about Zebra Reach, there would be plenty of local rewards to, well, reward you for shopping locally.

To download the app, with your iPhone or iPad, click here. For your Droid powered phone or tablet, click here.

To visit the Zebra Reach Web site, click here.

And, if you don't have a smartphone -- coming really, really soon are plastic cards that will work pretty much the same. The participating businesses (those with smartphones or tablets) will scan your card, but you'll have only one card to carry for all participating local businesses.

Here are the participating businesses and initial offers (and of course, we're looking for more businesses to participate):

Amazingly, even though Seattle played Tom Brady's New England on Sunday, none of our contest entrants picked Seattle as the defense likely to give up the most yards.

And Seattle did -- 475 yards, in fact.

So we picked the winner this week from among the four people who picked Miami (462 yards). The winner selected at random is Jessica Patnode. She wins a prize from T.F. Brown's.

There was not a lot of faith expressed in Buffalo's Ryan Fitzpatrick in our contest last week. Only four people picked him to lead the NFL in points scored, but the fact of the matter is, among the 10 possible choices in our contest, Fitzpatrick came out on top. In a random drawing of those four people who picked Fitzpatrick, Jason Reese won the contest.

Now, I think I've heard it all! A clean roof is a healthy roof, according to local businessman Eric von Kramer.

Those ugly black stains and discoloration are more than just an eyesore ruining the curb appeal of your home. They're actually a form of airborne algae called gloeocapsa magma, and it's ruining your roof. This algae actually feeds off the limestone in your shingles, von Kramer said, and it will eat away the stone causing premature failure of your roof.

Eric is in his third year of using a low-pressure chemical application to kill and remove the mold, mildew and algae, a process recommended by the Shingle Manufacturers Association.

The algae usually grows on a north-facing roof that does not get enough direct sunlight. The growth is usually mistaken for tree droppings or road dirt, but it is alive and feeding off your roof. Low-pressure roof cleaning is relatively new to the Northeast. It is very common, however, in other parts of the country where humidity and shade encourage its spread.

The process can usually be done in a morning with no disruption of your day, von Kramer assures. The cleaning mix is applied with a low-pressure 12-volt pump, so as not to damage the roof. This can usually be done from a ladder or bucket truck; very seldom is it necessary to step on a roof. The results are immediate, stunning and your satisfaction is fully guaranteed.

FYI -- von Kramer and his wife, Donna, have been in business in the area for 30 years.
