Virginia Strollo

Batavia - Mrs. Virginia Strollo, 91, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester following a brief illness.
Mrs. Strollo was born June 14, 1920 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Anthony and Marie  (Pifalow) Fiore.
A 1938 graduate of Batavia High School, she was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Jerome Hospital Guild and a volunteer at the NYS Veteran’s Home.
Survivors include two sons; Frank (Grace) Strollo of Batavia and Anthony (Kathy) Strollo of Albany; three daughters; Florence (Donald) Skinner of Batavia, Mary Ann Strollo and Dolores (Michael) Fee both of Rochester; her twin sister, Teresa DelPlato of Batavia. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. 
Her husband, the late Ralph Strollo died in 1997 and she was the sister of the late Joseph and Dominic Fiore, Jenny Miconi and Lucy Renzi. 
Visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 8 pm at the H. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia, NY.  Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 am Saturday at Ascension Parish, St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty St.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Notre Dame High School Foundation, 73 Union St. Batavia, NY 14020 or to your favorite charity.  Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum.

Wiliam Self, Jr.

William W. Self, Jr., USA, CW4 (Ret.), 82, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 12, 2012 in the MICU at HRMC, with his loving wife, Christa, by his side.

Bill was born December 18, 1928, in Shreveport, LA, to the late William Walker Self and Carol Armenia Self. Bill went to Orlando High School, and in 1944, he enlisted in the Army. Bill had a very distinguished career in the US Army, which included service as a security officer, counter terrorism officer, and tank maintenance officer. He served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII, Korea in the Korean conflict, and Japan for the occupation forces. During his honorable service, he received his Bachelors degree from Rollins College in 1975. Bill retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4) on December 18, 1988.

Bill held the position of Elective Office Vice Chairman for the Orange County Commissioner of Budget from 1959-1964. He also worked for US Civil Servant Department of Army 2nd 98th division-Buffalo; as Development Manager in Washington DC; and for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center.

He is survived by his wife, Christa Corey-Self; sons, William (Carol) Self and Gregory (Tina) Self; grandchildren, Ashley and Eric; stepchildren, Claudia Corey-Church, Michael Corey, and Joachim Corey; step granddaughter, Jasmine; and his long time friend of 60 plus years, Clyde Goolsby.

Bill was preceded in rest by his first wife of 53 years, Juanita Self.

Bill was proudly involved in Reserve Officers Assoc. Chapter # 12; NARFE Chapter # 609 of Melbourne; Buffalo Chapter 390th Regime Retiree Assoc.; Ret. Officer Assoc NY Chapter; American Legion Chapter 400 Orlando; Eola Masonic Lodge # 207 Bahaia Shrine of Orlando; 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry S.J. of Orlando; and Oldtimer’s of Orlando. He was also an avid race car driver.

We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the MICU staff at HRMC for their care and nurturing of Bill and our family during his illness. This gratitude also extends to Dr. German Castro, Dr. Simmy Pinto, Dr. Michael Green, Dr. John McKinney, Dr. Sangita Sahay, Dr. Anthony Tran, and Dr. Maritza Riascos-Mazo.

Family will receive friends from 11 AM to 12 PM on Saturday, May, 19, 2012 at Davis Seawinds Funeral Home, 560 Montreal Ave., Melbourne, FL with a Celebration of Bill’s Life following at 12 PM.

Monica D. Raphael

Monica D. Raphael, 83 of Batavia, passed away peacefully May 12, 2012 at Absolut @ Gasport Nursing Home. She was born December 5, 1928 in Batavia, to the late Angelo (Catherine Attardi) Miconi. Monica retired from Genesee Community College where she worked for 27 years in the Business Office. She was a member of Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, the Batavia Business and Professional Woman’s Club, and Friends of the Richmond Library. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph, who with his brother Dan, owned and operated Star Dry Cleaners and Tailors. Brothers Frank and Gene Miconi.

Survivors include her daughters Dianne (Ed) Wierda of Boca Raton, FL; Roberta Raphael of Rochester; son Joseph (Maryann) Raphael of Batavia; four grandchildren Kyle (Matt) Mobley of Tampa, FL; Jenna, Jared, and Andrea Raphael of Batavia; two brothers Al Miconi of Batavia; Ed Miconi of Phoenix, AZ; along with several nieces and nephews.  

There will be no prior visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 AM on Saturday May 26, 2012 to be celebrated at Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church 303 East Main St. Batavia, New York 14020. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Batavia.

Christian R. "Dick" Barthel

Christian R. "Dick" Barthel: On Saturday May 5, 2012 at the age of 83. Predeceased by his son Charles William "Chub" Barthel, his parents and many brothers. He is survived by his children Nanci (Bill) Bogan, Richard Barthel, Russell (Jeanine) Barthel, Don (Lisa) Barthel, Catherine (Pete) Loran, Cynthia (Blaine Timmerman) Barthel and their mother Johanna McMullen, 15 very special grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, sister Loretta Smith, several nieces and nephews and many beloved friends. Friends may call Wednesday May 9th from 6-8 pm at the Fowler Funeral Home Inc. 340 West Ave Brockport. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, 10:00 am at St. Mark's Parish 16789 Kenmor Rd. Kendall. Mrs. Audrey M. Reiss

Corfu - Mrs. Audrey M. Reiss, 78, of Corfu, passed away Sunday (May 6, 2012) at Buffalo General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Audrey was born February 8, 1934, in Batavia, the dear daughter of the late Clarence and Beatrice Hale Cummings.  She was a graduate of Corfu High School and worked for many years in the Pembroke Central School District as an Aide.  Audrey was predeceased by her son Roy G. Reiss, Jr., who passed away in August 2011.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Roy G. Reiss of Corfu; her precious children, Rick (Debbie) Reiss of Corfu, Randy (Sandy) Reiss of Akron and Roxanne (Ron) Gabbey of Akron; loving sister of Arthur (Marion) Cummings of Corfu, Robert (Marjary) Cummings of Corfu, Richard Cummings of South Carolina and Thomas Cummings of Elba;  grandmother of eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

There is no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service that will be held Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4-6 Main Street, Corfu. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu. Theresa E. Smith

Mrs. Theresa E. Smith, 79, of Batavia, who enjoyed spending time with her family, died Friday (May 4, 2012)at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Theresa was born February 25, 1933 in Rochester, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Weiss) Mogenhan.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie (Chuck) Weaver of Batavia and Karen (Jason) Ceisner of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, Dustin (Rachael) Potwora of Naples, FL, Adam Weaver of Batavia, Ryan Weaver of Batavia, Aiden Ceisner of Raleigh, NC and Kelcey Ceisner of Raleigh, NC; a great-granddaughter, Bayley Potwora of Naples, FL; a sister-in-law, Betty Mogenhan of Batavia and nieces and nephews.

She is the wife of the late Richard Smith, grandmother of the late Bailey Marie Weaver and sister of the late Joseph Mogenhan.

Calling hours will be on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia.  Services will be at 1:00 also on Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.

Josephine Stone

Batavia- Mrs. Josephine Stone, 91, a retired employee of Melton Shirt Factory died Thursday, May 3, 2012at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Stone was born November 24, 1920 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Stephen and Jennie Fiorella Lombardo.

She was a member of Ascension Parish, St. Anthony's Church.  Mrs. Stone enjoyed spending time with her family and loved bingo.  She will be remembered for her excellent cooking talent.

 Her husband, Leo Stone, died March 11, 2009.

Survivors include two daughters; Janet (Gregory) May and Mary Rose (Gary) Rademacker, both of Batavia and one sister, Carol (late Albert) Mruczek of Batavia.  She was the grandmother of Wendy (Angelo) Polito, Jody (John) McCulley and Holly Silverling, all of Batavia, Ricky Recchio of Florida and  Kristine (Thomas) Tucker of Tennessee.  Also surviving are 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Robert H. Shepard

Robert H. Shepard, age 69, died Wednesday May 2nd at his home. He was born in Warsaw, NY on December 14, 1942 a son of the late Harold and Doris (Kinney) Shepard. Bob worked for the Genesee-Wyoming railroad company, he worked for several constructions firms, a pipeline company in Dunkirk, and was a car painter for the former English Chevrolet in Perry. He was a member of the Perry VFW post 5009, Perry Vets Club, Silver Lake Sportmans Club, the former Perry Moose Club and former Oldies but Goodies Car Club in Perry. He enjoyed owning several antiques cars in the past and was an avid John Wayne collector and buff. He is preceded in death by a wife Susan (Kraft) Shepard who died in 1985; brother Herbert Shepard; father-in-law Thomas Rice; brother-in-law Tommy Rice; sister-in-law Cindy (Michael) Laraby.

He is survived by his wife: Linda (Rice) Shepard whom he married on Oct. 4, 1986, 2 sons: Mark (Nahir) Shepard of Colorado Springs, CO., John (Elizabeth) Shepard of Wendell, NC., 4 grandchildren: Taylor, Jordon, Samantha and Alison Shepard, a mother-in-law: Florence Rice of Perry, 4 brother-in-laws: Paul Rice of Perry, Jeff (Mary) Rice of Silver Lake, Steve (Polly) Rice of Leicester, Brian Rice of Perry, along with many nieces and nephews.

Nancy L. Tucker

Nancy L. Tucker, 75 of Rochester, formerly of Perry Center died, April 30, 2012, at St. John’s Home in Rochester where she had been residing. She was born in Perry Center on August 10, 1936 to the late Edward P. (Margaret M. Silsbe) Fancher. Mrs. Tucker was 1954 graduate of Perry Central School. She was  a home health aid, nurses aid, painter and wallpaper hanger. She was also a former 4H leader. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, knitting, painting pictures, sewing, winemaking, music, and especially enjoyed being a mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband William J. tucker who died in 2009 and a granddaughter Elizabeth M. White.

She is survived by 1 son: Seth Tucker of Rochester, 2 daughters: Shelle (Timothy) White of Scottsville and Leslie (Hans) Kunze of Wyoming, 3 sisters: Vada E. Good of Greece, Sandra M. (Herbert) Heins of Hilton Head, SC, Jane A. (Roger) Stephens of Silver Springs, 2 brothers: James E. (Jacqueline) Fancher of Laurel Hill , NC, John  F. Fancher of Warsaw, 1 sister-in-law: Lois (Nunzio) Bonefede of Silver Lake, 4 grandchildren: Phillip White, Karl, Mary and Grace Kunze along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Denise R. Goatseay

Denise R. Goatseay, 59 of Batavia, died April 29, 2012 at her home. She was born May 3, 1952 in Buffalo, to the late Albert P. (Ruth Sweitzer) Goatseay. Mrs. Goatseay was an occupational therapist who worked at several school districts in the area including Pembroke, Attica and Elba. She was an avid runner and she enjoyed reading. Denise loved her family, friends and students.

She is survived by her daughter Kelsey Lee Conn of Rochester, sister Jacquelyn (Robert) Swinarski of Batavia, three special cousins Pauline (James) Sweet of Orchard Park, Robert (Pat) Groth of East Aurora, and Cheryl (Jerry) Malczewski of Orchard Park. 

Friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Saturday May 5, 2012 at the Northgate Free Methodist Church, 8160 Bank St. Road, Batavia. A Celebration of Life Service will follow calling hours at 11:00 AM at the Church on Saturday. Interment will take place in Batavia Cemetery.

DONALD E. SPILLANE

LeRoy~Age 80, of West Main Street, died Friday evening (April 27, 2012) at United Memorial Medical Center with his loving family at his side.

     Mr. Spillane was born Febraury 22, 1932 in Batavia, a son of the late James and Anna Wallace Spillane.

He will be remembered as a very loving and kind man, who was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and dedicated member of the LeRoy American Legion. He started his employment years working at the Jell-O Factory and eventually worked several years for and retired from Eastman Kodak. He was also a volunteer fireman with the LeRoy Fire Dept. and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was very involved with his parish, Our Lady of Mercy, serving as a Eucharistic Minister. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, playing bocce and golfing.

     Mr. Spillane is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ursala Drayo Spillane, daughters; Shannon (Thomas Welsh) Spillane of Annapolis, MD and Shawn (Joseph) Siconolfi of Rochester; son, Brendan Spillane (Johanna) of Rochester; grandsons, Nicholas Vincent and Tyler Siconolfi; brother in law, Arnold Shockow; sister in law and brother in law, Rachel and William Klinkbeil; nephews, Kevin (Barbara) Klinkbeil and Kristopher (Catherine) Klinkbeil and a special aunt, Andy Frank.

     A special thanks to Dr. Rumi and United Memorial Medical Center for their many years of dedicated care.

     Family and friends may call on Tuesday May 1, 2012, from 4-7 PM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish (St. Peter's SIte), 44 Lake Street, LeRoy, where his Rite of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. KEVIN LAWRENCE BERL

KEVIN LAWRENCE BERL, age 57, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in his home in LeRoy on April 28th 2012.

He was born May 21st 1954, in Rochester, NY of the late Lawrence H. Berl & Dolores (Siplo) Berl of Penfield. He was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.  He was a 1972 Penfield High Graduate who would have attended his 40th high school reunion this Year.  He worked a full time job as a machinist for more than 30 years. Many people knew him as having a part time passion for being a DJ.  He had a loving passion for God and his Family which was evident in his daily life.   He will be remembered by many as “that tall guy with the cowboy hat” he had an answer for everything and anything for many people, and could hold a conversation for hours with anyone as long as you gave him the time! Gadgets and gizmos and computers were of plenty for this man, and always willing to help a fellow man in need.  God has truly opened the heavens to receive an amazing spirit that his family and friends will forever remember.

He is survived by his loving wife Gloria Berl (LeRoy) who he married on August 20th 2004 and sons Kendric & (Cortney) Berl (LeRoy) Jason (Vanessa) Berl (Webster) Geoffrey &( Joeylyn) Berl (LeRoy) & Daughter Stephanie Sumeriski Berl (Batavia). Step-daughters Tiffany & (Ryan) Appleton (Long Island, NY) & Cori Majors (Batavia). And 14 grandchildren Dylan, Brooke, Kristopher ,Kaleb, Jaden, Calleigh, Mikah, Micheal, Collin, Jacob, Olivia, Morgan, Elizabeth, and Amber.

Kathleen L. Alianell

Kathleen L. Alianell, age 83, entered into rest April 27, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born September 27, 1928, the daughter of the late Genaro and Lula (Paine) Fasano.   Kay and her late husband, Charles J. Alianell, owned and operated Kay’s Floral and Gift Shop in Batavia for nearly 50 years.  Survivors include her loving children, Dr. Gary (Michele) Alianell of CA, Charlene (Robert) Frye of Rochester, and LaDonna (Michael) Della Gala of CA; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alecia Alianell, Charles J. (Christine Hsieh) Frye, Margaret K. (Caswell) Smith, Daniele, Gina, Maria, and Michael Della Gala; great-grandchildren, Lorenzo Charles and Sabrina Valentina Smith;  also survived by her brother Anthony (Shirley) Fasano, sisters-in-law Win (the late Patrick) Fasano, Mary (the late Angelo) Fasano,  Joan (the late James) Fasano, Harriet (the late Genaro Fasano),  many nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death by sisters Lorraine (the late Jack) Nowatka, Deanne (the late John) Muscarella, Marcelene (the late William) Drage. 

Kathleen’s life was all about love for family and friends and helping others in their time of need.  She was a gifted floral designer who believed in the joy and happiness which flowers bring.  Her courage and perseverance through life’s challenges were an inspiration to all who knew her.  Kathleen was kind and generous and her simple gifts touched so many.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, from 3 – 7 pm at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main St. Batavia, New York.  Prayers will be recited on Wednesday at the funeral home at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia, at 9:30 am.  Memorials are suggested to the Robert P. MATTHEW L. SMITH

LeRoy ~ Age 23, of Lake Street, passed away after a brief illness Wednesday evening (April 25, 2012) at Strong Memorial Hospital, with his loving family at his side.

     Matt was born October 22, 1988 in Brockport, a son of Daniel & Nancy Stanton Smith.

     He will be remembered as an all-around sportsman, who was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a craftsman, who enjoyed doing handiwork of all kinds. He recently has a passion for playing the guitar, and a sincere passion for the Miami Dolphins.

     In addition to his mom & dad, Matt is survived by his precious daughter, Peyton Marie Smith; fiance, Melissa Gray, sister, Jamie (David Heurtas) Kremer, brother Daniel Platt, paternal grandmother, Mary Smith of LeRoy, Uncle Tim (Aunt Barbara) Smith, special cousin, Shawna Smith, Aunt Deborah (John) Loreant; maternal granparents, Clayton and Nancy Gill of Pavilion; Uncle Bob (Aunt Sheila), Aunt Penny (Uncle John), Uncle George (Aunt Holly), Uncle Joe (Aunt Crystal) and Aunt Pam; along with many other cousins, a niece, a nephew and dear friends. Matt was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Lloyd Smith, cousin, Doug Wandtke and nephew, Christian Kremer.

     Family and friends may call on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 4-7 PM at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020. Charles F. "Phred" Wenke

Charles F. "Phred" Wenke, age 63, of Perry, died on Friday April 27, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness. He was born in Olean, NY on January 26, 1949 a son of the late Charles F. and Martha(Gofran)Wenke II. He served with the US Navy and graduated from University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy. He was the pharmacist at Rite Aid in LeRoy up until his illness in March. He had worked for Rite Aid in Dansville and Walmart in Geneseo. Phred was a member of the Triple Creek Golf Club in Nunda. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He is preceded in death by a brother Geoff Wenke and sister Nicole Rickard.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years Roxann Dobmeier Wenke whom he married in August of 1982,a son: Evan Wenke of Perry,a daughter: Kourtney Wenke of Rochester, a step-daughter: Shannon Kestler of Attica, 3 grandchildren: Jacob Work, Gavin Harkins, and Bradley Wenke, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Family and friends are invited to an open house from 2-7pm on Thursday May 3rd at the Wenke Home 85 Lake St. Perry, NY 14530. Interment will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Olean, NY.
