Brien J. Tyoe, December 20, 1983 - September 21, 2020. “Loving Father, Son, Brother and Fiancé”

Brien J. Tyoe was born in Utica, NY and is the son of Robert K. Tyoe, Jr. and Joanne M. (Gagnon) Tyoe. 
He is predeceased by grandmother Marion E. Tyoe, grandfather Joseph Gagnon, mother JoAnne M. (Gagnon) Tyoe and brother Robert K. Tyoe III.  As well as, great uncles Robert VanEvera and Willard VanEvera. Surviving siblings are younger brother Matthew A. Tyoe with wife Kimberly Tyoe whom reside in Coatesville, PA.  As well as, step sister Rachael E. Crane who resides in Canastota, NY. Brien is also survived by his grandfather Robert K. Tyoe, Sr., who resides in Florida. As well as, father Robert K. Tyoe, Jr., and step-mother Marlene Karen Tyoe who reside in New Hartford, NY. 

Also surviving is grandmother Dorothy Gagnon and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as deceased family members, from the Gagnon, Zenobio and VanEvera families. Also survived by uncles and aunts, Rodney W. Tyoe and Gretchen Tyoe in Chadwicks, NY and Mark Tyoe and Debbie Tyoe in Liverpool, NY.  Along with numerous cousins from the Tyoe family. Brien has three surviving sons Brien J. Tyoe II, Colby M. Tyoe (sons of Kayla Walker) and Christian J. Tyoe (son of Marla Mugler).  Along with fiancée Marla A. Mugler of Batavia, NY and her daughter Madison M. Chatley.

Brien lived in Utica, NY before moving to New Hartford, NY where he attended New Hartford Central School District. Brien attended college at Genesee Community College in Batavia where he played baseball and earned an associates degree.

Brien settled in Batavia, NY after college, working at numerous jobs over the years.  Brien was recently employed working in auto sales. 
Brien was a dedicated athlete specifically excelling in baseball.  He was an avid sports fan who loved rooting for the NY Giants, NY Yankees and the NJ Devils.  Brien was a family man and animal lover.  Brien was a friend to everyone he met and his children were his whole life. 

Family and friends may call Friday, September 25, 2020, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 East Main Street, Corfu. A brief prayer service will follow at 8 pm.   Francis H. (Frank) Hemmerich, 66, passed away on September 19, 2020. He was born at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base, Florida on March 23, 1954 and was a lifelong resident of Batavia. Predeceased by his mother Vera (Hemmerich) Leone, Father Francis Hemmerich; brother Louis A. Leone.

Surviving family members include step father Louis Leone, sister Debbie Hemmerich-Olsowsky, brother David (Lisa) Leone, brother Vincent (Joanna) Leone, and several nieces and nephews.

His love for animals was evident as he was always surrounded by his many pets throughout the years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to all he knew.

Visiting hours will be held from 4:00-6:00PM on Thursday September 24, 2020 at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020 with a Memorial Service to begin at 6:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be held at a private service by the family.

Leo  K.  Reak, 95, of Oakfield,  passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2020 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Leo was born February 20th, 1925 in Alabama Center,  a son of the late Charles and Elsie (Spring) Reak.

A veteran, Leo served with the United States Army, earning the rank of Corporal T5.  During his service with the Army, Leo was a part of the supply and prisoner transport in the Philippines and office filing in Hawaii.   Leo enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening and was a past member of the VFW.  He worked at Doehler Jarvis as a metal worker and as a miner at US Gypsum in Oakfield.

Surviving are his son, Paul (Alice) Reak of Elba; his daughter, Ellen (Douglas) Murrray of East Bethany, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Leo is predeceased by his wife, Ruth Reak, son, Ronald Reak, daughter-in-law, Mary Reak, great-granddaughter, Crystal Murray, brothers, Stanton Reak, George Reak and Raymond Reak and his sisters, Verna Morse, Irma Cavigliano and Ruth Jones.

Leo's service and military honors will be held privately at Grandview Cemetery in Batavia.

Shirley M. Winters (nee Fitzgerald), 89, of Batavia, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020 at her home. 

Mrs. Winters was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late Marguerite Fitzgerald McDivitt and the late John J. Fitzgerald.

Shirley was a member of the St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church and a retired school bus driver for the Batavia City School District and Arc. She was active in local politics, which led to serving as Batavia Town Clerk and Batavia Town Supervisor.

She is predeceased by her husband Wesley W. Winters, whom she was married to for 52 years until his death; her brother John Fitzgerald, and her sister Kathleen Sobczak.

Surviving are: her children Beverly (Barry) McCabe, of East Pembroke, Diane Winters, of Batavia, Wesley A. (Ann) Winters, of Batavia, Wendy Hake, of Whitesboro, and Pamela (David) Zielinski, of Amsterdam; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Shirley was the sister of Agnes (Donald) Nelson, of Corfu, Jane (Ray) Ehrmentraut, of Churchville, Mike (Debbie) McDivitt, of Hilton, and DeEtta (Frank) Silvestro, of Clarence. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Church Hall, 8656 Church St., East Pembroke, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. A face covering will be mandatory as well as safe, social distancing. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, East Pembroke.

Byron - Conrad C. Gifford Sr. of Byron, passed away on September 14th, 2020, his 90th birthday at Crossroads House in Batavia.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Roselin Gifford of Oneonta, his brother Gordon and his beloved wife Marie E. (Parsons) Gifford.

Conrad served his country as a member of the US Army and a veteran of the Korean War where he was awarded his combat infantry badge with 5 bronze stars as well as several other decorations.  During the war, Conrad served in both the 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions, initially with the 29th Regiment and then as a proud member of the 27th Regiment Wolfhounds.

A life-long patriot, Conrad was an avid member of the VFW, the Korean War Association, the American Legion and the Honor Guard.  As a notable entrepreneur in the Batavia area, Conrad was the original owner and proprietor of Golden Coin Laundry and the Golden Mobile Home Park as well as several other businesses and properties.

Conrad was a loving father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family.  Conrad is survived by his son Conrad Gifford Jr. and his wife Margaret, his daughter Colleen Lamie and her former husband Larry, his grandchildren: Chelsie Lamie and husband David Alfonso, Brad Lamie and partner Alex Wood, and Callista Dehart and husband Jason, as well as his great-grandchildren: Michael Alfonso, Henrey Alfonso and Brody Ace.  

Services will be held at a future time when Conrad and his wife Marie are laid to rest in the future Western New York Veterans Cemetery in Pembroke. Silver Springs / Castile, N.Y. ~ Bayne Freeman Johnson,  age 76, of Silver Lake, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2020.

    

 Born on October 26, 1943 in Warsaw, NY, he was the son of the late Wilburt and Jessie Kennedy Johnson Gentner.

     He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, dear friend, and role model to many.  Well known as a master teacher and coach, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, wine making and boating on Silver Lake.

     Bayne’s passion for coaching and his accomplishments as a coach made him well known throughout Western New York. As a varsity football coach,he received both awards and recognition for teams he coached at Notre Dame of Batavia, Oakfield-Alabama and Pittsford-Sutherland Central Schools and the University of Rochester where he served as an offensive line coach.

     Besides coaching football, Bayne also enjoyed great success as a basketball coach.  He was the Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Coach at Notre Dame the year the team won the Manhattan Cup Championship at the old War Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, NY in 1969. He then followed in roles as the varsity boys’ basketball coach at Oakfield-Alabama and finally as the varsity girls’ coach at Pittsford Sutherland, where he also took teams from both schools to sectional playoffs.

     He was inducted into the Section V Football Hall of Fame in 2008 for his coaching accomplishment in both sports.  His 1973 Notre Dame High School football team, which was the Bishop Smith League Co-Champion, was also inducted into that school’s Hall of Fame.

     Bayne is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carol Sobolewski Johnson; son, Bayne Johnson Jr.; grandchildren, Deliah Ribaudo-Johnson (Fiancé, Jerome Battle) and Dylan J. Johnson; great-grandchildren, Marina Ribaudo-Johnson and Bryson Battle; aunt, Leia Sherman; brother-in-law, Robert Moscicki; niece, Saundra Moscicki (partner, Carmen Stief), along with many cousins and dear friends.  He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Lee Moscicki, and nephew, Bruce Moscicki.

     A Celebration of Bayne’s Life will be held on Friday, October 2 from 12 ~ 3 P.M. at “The Chalet” of the East Hill Creamery, 346 S. Main Street, Perry, N.Y.  (Face masks are required and social distancing restrictions apply)

Kathleen C. Heywood, 72 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Sunday (September 13, 2020) with her family by her side.

She was born November 12, 1947 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Stanley and Sophia Cichocki Adamczyk.

Kathleen was a Registered Nurse for over 35 years and was employed by St. Jerome Hospital, United Memorial Medical Center and Genesee County Nursing Home. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading. She was a member of Resurrection Parish and adored her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters, Michelle (James) Mullen of Batavia, Pamela Heywood of Batavia, Aimee (Brian) Fisher of Spencerport and Jessica Heywood of Batavia. Grandchildren, Tiffany Lamb, Nathaniel Mullen and Alyssa Mullen. Brother in-law, Kevin Kiersz of North Carolina. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was the sister of the late Cynthia Kiersz and grandmother of the late Larissa Mullen.

Spencerport ~ Matthew J. Norstrand, age 35, passed away Sunday morning (Sept. 13, 2020) at Strong Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

    

 He was born February 7, 1985 in Fairbanks, AK, a son of Daniel Norstrand and Pamela Rigoni Miller.

     Matt was known to live life to its fullest.  He loved motorcycles and enjoyed hunting, boating and the outdoors in general.  He was a past MMA fighter and was a GFF middle weight champion.  His biggest love though, was for his family.  He adored his nieces and nephews and all his friends became his "family".

     He will be sadly missed by his father, Daniel Norstrand of LeRoy; mother, Pamela (Don) Miller of Inverness, FL; brother, Daniel R. (Lu) Norstrand of Wesley Chapel, FL; sister, Katie (Tom) Kruger of Spencerport; step-brother, Donald (Jamie Hastings) Miller of Bethel, ME; step-sister, Rebecca Miller of Marion, TX; nieces and nephews, Ada and Demi Kruger, Naomi and Arik Norstrand, Donald and Skylar Miller; maternal grandmother, Virginia Rigoni, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends, who were like family.

     He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Alfred Rigoni and paternal grandparents, Charles and Norma Norstrand.

Darrell A. Rivers, 79, of Batavia passed away peacefully on Saturday May 2, 2020 under the care of Hospice Buffalo after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Darrell was born on October 30, 1940 at his home in Canton, NY to the late Allen and Sally Rivers.

Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 60 years; Eleanor Ann (Barnhart) Rivers of Batavia; his five children Martin (Debra) Rivers of Churchville, Kathleen (Timothy) Evens of East Pembroke, Sherry (Christopher) Tacy of Oakfield, Jonathan (Katie) Rivers of Basom and Kimberly (Daniel) Cervone of Batavia; He also leaves behind seven grandchildren who he loved dearly, Brian (Richie) Rivers, Allyssa Kuchler, Taylor Rivers, Krystal Rivers, Danielle Cervone, Zachary Tacy and Mikaela Rivers; three sisters Beverly Corcoran, Cheryl Barber and Lori Forsyth, along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, his is predeceased by four siblings; Arthur Rivers, Carl Rivers, Rita Sanfratello and Barbara Blackmer.

Darrell devoted his life to taking care of his family. He was the owner of Darrell’s Auto Service in West Batavia for over 21 years, which is now owned by his son Jon. He was a Certified Ford Technician and a Mopar Master Technician. He was highly regarded for his work at many local automotive dealerships throughout his career. Darrell enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He loved working with his hands and had many different hobbies including photography, painting, gardening, woodworking, restoring and refurbishing furniture and sign making.

Batavia, NY: Dennis J. Wittman passed away peacefully at Charlotte House, North Java, NY on July 1, 2020 and was born on June 2, 1943 in Buffalo, New York the late Jerome and Evelyn (Hamilton) Wittman. Dennis is survived by his wife, Carol (Chmielowiec), daughter, Holly (Michael) Stoddard of Honeoye, NY, daughter, Jennifer (fiancée, Alfred Flores) of San Antonio, TX, sister, Kathie (Paul) Beaulieu of Cheektowaga, N.Y., brother, Philip (Nancy) of Akron, NY, brother in law, Dr. A. Steven Bangs of Long Island, NY, sister in law, Marsha Deman of Defiance, Ohio  and nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great niece and nephew and his dear Husky Buddy, Kodah. Predeceased in death by his brother Allan Wittman, sister in law, Jeanette Bangs and sister in law, Dolores Clark.

Dennis was a graduate of Cleveland Hill High School, State University of New York at Buffalo, Wadhams Hall Seminary and University of Rochester. He was employed by Genesee County first as a Probation Officer from 1969 to 1980 and from 1980 to 2005 as first Director of Genesee Justice with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department.

Dennis incorporated the Restorative Justice model to the program and Genesee Justice received world-wide notoriety and was recognized as a leader in promoting victims’ rights.  His career spanned traveling to 44 states, 6 Canadian Provinces and Japan speaking on Genesee Justice.

Dennis was a member of Ascension Parish, Batavia, New York. He was Vice President of the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society, President of Sacred Heart Parish Council, Religious Education Teacher and Pre-Cana Instructor with his wife.

Batavia- Jennie Hawks, age 99, of Batavia passed away on Monday at her home in Batavia

Jennie was born March 18th, 1921 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Louis and Rose (Scammaca) DeFino. She was lovingly nick named “Joll” for her jolly and joyful ways. She is the wife of the late N. Lawrence Hawks Jr.

Mrs. Hawks was a lifelong member of The Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church. She could regularly be seen, walking her children to church.
She retired after 21 years of dedicated service to GTE Sylvania in Batavia. Her work ethic was second to none.

Jennie was a devoted and unconditionally loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sacrificially considering the needs of others first, before her own needs. Her mottos were as follows: “Get up early and make each day count “ “Be mindful, God is watching.” “Be good and be careful!” Babies and children held an especially dear place in her heart. A talented homemaker, she was well known for her Italian cooking and exceptional baking, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas. She loved knitting and crocheting. She loved music and enjoyed dancing well into her nineties.

Jennie is survived by her children, Janet L. Hawks of Batavia, Paul L (Mary Anne) Hawks of Florida, Betty Ann (Thomas) Bartz of Alexander, Sharon (Peter) Walker of Pennsylvania, Lawrence (Victoria) Hawks of Massachusetts, 11 Grandchildren and 27 Great Grandchildren.
 
Jennie is preceded in death by her siblings: Sam “Spats” DeFino, Mary Klute, Josephine Pacer, Betty Magarine, Annie Lafanara and Millie Povorsky. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jack Hawks.

Friends and Family May call on Saturday (September 19, 2020) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 E. Main St. in Batavia where prayers will be recited at 12:30 p.m.  Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, Jennie's Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church will be private for the family only.  Burial will be in Grandview Cemtery in Batavia.

Kathleen “Kathy” Mary Cornelius, Alabama Center, NY, passed on September 9, 2020, after a long illness. Beloved wife of Francis L. Oakfield - Wilfred S. Brooks , 96  of Oakfield  passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at his home under the care of HomeCare and Hospice.

Mr. Brooks was born October 24, 1923 in Washington, D.C., a son of the late Arthur E. Brooks and Ruth (Steverson) Brooks.

Mr. Brooks was a member of the Oakfield United Methodist Church where he was a Lay Leader.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1197 in Batavia, where he served as Western New York Council President and 7th District Commander.  

Wilfred's list of accomplishments is plentiful.  He was at one time or another the Recording Secretary and Vice President of the Federal Labor Union #22485, Chairman of the Oakfield Republican Party, a member of the Board of Directors of Genesee/LeRoy United Way, Councilman of the Town of Oakfield (6 years), Supervisor of the Town of Oakfield (4 years), District #1 Genesee County Legislator (8 years), Chairman of the Public Service Committee, member of the Ways & Means Committee, Chairman, GLOW Solid Waste Management Committee, Chairman, Genesee Fingerlakes Regional Planning Council, Board of Advisory Directors at Pavilion State Bank, Board of Directors of Greater Rochester United Way, President, Oakfield Alabama Lions Club,  Dean of Annual Retreat with Camp Asbury, Chairman, Genesee Area Men's Prayer Breakfast (2 years), Chairman, DCOM United Methodist Batavia District, and a Cub Master with the Boy Scouts.  

Wilfred is the husband of the late Juanita A. (Thomas) Brooks who passed away September 19, 2019.

Surviving are his children, Craige Brooks of Oakfield, Braad (Dianne) Brooks of Oakfield, Linne (late Gordon) Hopkins of Dansville, and Heather Brooks-Stephens of Oakfield; a sister, Elaine (Mac) Booten of LeRoy. 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He is preceded in death by a great-grandson, Anthony Jerome Smith; a brother, Jerome (late Jean) Brooks; and a sister, Oma (late William) Scott.

Family and Friends may call on Friday (September 18, 2020) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Oakfield United Methodist Church, 2 South Main Street in Oakfield, where Wilfred's Funeral Service will immediately follow at 12:00 noon.  Burial will be in Cary Cemetery in Oakfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oakfield United Methodist Church.

Bonita “Bonnie” Jean Fergus Crichton, aka Mrs. Crichton of Conesus, NY: Born in Angola, Indiana on August 15, 1949, Bonnie grew up in Findley Lake, NY, and relished living the last 35 years on a wooded hillside in Conesus, NY.

Bonnie graduated Valedictorian from Clymer Central School in 1967, and received her master’s degree from SUNY Geneseo in 1971. She spent most of her career teaching English to 7th graders at Pavilion Central School. You can recognize her former students by their impressive ability to diagram sentences.

Bonnie was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Livonia. Beyond the local church, she also found joy teaching, serving in Lay Servant Ministries, and providing leadership for the United Methodist Western NY Conference.

She hated to fly, but loved to be behind the wheel of her car. Vacations, adventures, Emily’s soccer games, even driving across the country twice, enabling her to fulfill her lifelong goal of visiting Alaska. In retirement, she combined her love of the road with her passion for helping others by driving patients to medical appointments for Catholic Charities.

An ardent Buffalo Bills fan, Sunday afternoons were for folding laundry and watching football. She also never turned down a round of Boggle, Bananagrams, or Rummikub, and was always ready to pull together a euchre match.

Bonnie loved her extended family and was a pillar of the Montgomery clan. She was their historian, secretary, and treasurer, and avidly researched her family genealogy.

Thank you to everyone who supported Bonnie during her journey. We recognize we will never know all of the countless ways you helped during her final years.

Bonnie was preceded by her parents Barney and Margie Fergus and her children Joseph, Jacob, James, and Mary Crichton. She is survived by her husband Peter Crichton, daughter Emily (Ross) O’Hara, brother Ben (Sheri) Fergus, Norwegian exchange sister Betzy (Torfinn) Naper, and nieces, nephews, and cherished family and friends she lovingly adopted along the way.

Family and friends may call at the United Methodist Church of Livonia, 21 Summers Street, Livonia, NY 14487 for drive-thru visitation on Tuesday, September 15th, from 5-7pm. The family will greet visitors in front of the church. All are welcome to attend and we ask that everyone remain in their vehicles. For public health, the family will hold Bonnie’s funeral privately.   Dorothy Perl, age 93, of Sheldon, NY passed away peacefully on Saturday September 12, 2020. She was born in Orchard Park, NY on November 19, 1926 a daughter of Edward and Emma (Theil) Benz.

Dorothy and her husband, the late Bernard Perl, were partners in their family farm. She cherished her family and enjoyed every minute spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well known for her cookies sprinkled with Grandma’s love and a pie for every occasion. Dorothy was an avid volunteer at St. Cecilia’s Church in Sheldon for many years and took great pride in being a regular blood donor for the Red Cross.

She survived by her son; James B. (Cathy) Perl; grandchildren Stacy (Jesse) Schmidt, James G. (Maura) Perl and Tanya (Shaun) Koch. She will be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren; Kierra Perl, Leah and Hanah Rosenbeck; Lilian, Madeline, Allison and Olivia Koch; Asher and Quinn Perl. She is survived by her brother Howard Benz.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband; Bernard Perl; son Gary Perl; brothers Raymond, Clarence, Gerald, Norbert and Lee Benz; sisters Evelyn Benz and Alice Graffeo.

There will be no prior calling hours. A 1:00PM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 19, 2020 at St. John Neumann Parish (St. Cecilia’s site) 991 Centerline Road Strykersville, NY 14145.
