Age 73, of Corfu, died peacefully Sunday July 17, 2011 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. She was born January 25, 1938 in Buffalo, NY daughter of the late Stanley & Florence (Szymanski) Trzaska. Mary Ann is well known in the Harness Horse Racing community as an accomplished owner, driver and trainer. She had a life-long passion for the industry, being one of the area's first women drivers having been a part of Batavia Downs and Buffalo Raceway since 1968 and was a member of the Western New York Harness Horseman's Association. She took pride in her Polish heritage and loved and prepared Polish foods. She was a lover of nature, animals, cooking and baking.

     She is survived by her loving husband of over 20 years Richard "Dick" Luce of Corfu; her children Daniel (Jaqueline) Sudyk of Spencerport; Carl (Michelle Roberts) Surdyk of Boston, NY; Lynette (Gregory) McGiveron of Basom and Scott (Deborah) Sarama of Elkridge, MD; three brothers Stanley (Joni) Trzaska of Lancaster; Raymond (Sylvia) Trzaska of W. Seneca and Gerald (Deb) Trzaska of Getzville; 10 grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Frank P. Sanfratello  64, of  Horseheads, NY formerly of Batavia died Saturday July 16, 2011 at Elcor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Horseheads NY. He was born  January 20, 1947 in Batavia, NY to  the late Anthony P. and Theresa (Arena) Sanfratello.  Mr. Sanfratello worked construction in the Batavia and Rochester area prior to his retirement. He was a Vietnam Era Veteran, member of the American Legion Glenn S. Loomis Post #332, Veness Strollo Post #1602 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the former St. Nicholas Social Club. Frank was a member of Resurrection Parish (St. Mary’s Church) and former usher.  He graduated from SUNY Brockport with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. He also belonged to the East Pembroke Sportsman’s Club.  Frank was an avid outdoorsman loving to hunt, fish, and camp.

He is survived by three brothers Anthony A. (Stella) Sanfratello of Colorado, Samuel J. (Audrey) Sanfratello of Painted Post, NY and Daniel Sanfratello of Fairport, NY. Nieces, Nephews and Cousins also survive.

Charles was born in Warsaw, NY a son of the late Kenneth and Amy Wellman Winter. He was a graduate of Perry High School, he was a self employed dairy farmer his entire life and was a former Town of Perry Assessor. He was a member of the LaGrange Baptist Church, Dairylea Cooperative Inc. and the Grange. Mr. Winter is preceded in death by his first wife Mildred (Yunker) Winter, and a sister Lois Griffith.

He is survived by his loving wife Betty (Habkirk) Winter; daughter Charlotte Hewitt of Schenectady; sons Curtis (Virginia) Winter; Clayton (Paula) Winter both of Perry; step-children Tracy (Fred) Goebel of Kitty Hawk, NC; Mg. Scott (Laurie) Holden of Kempner, TX; sister Maryanne (Lee) Close of Avon; brother Gerald (Etta) Winter of Perry, loved by 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Rose Pierson, 76 of Corfu. Died July 14, 2011 at Rochester General Hospital. Born November 22, 1934 in Batavia, NY to the late Joseph (Mary Armenia) Ottaviani. Mrs. Pierson was retired from the City of Batavia Inspection Department where she worked for over 25 years.  She was a member of the East Shelby Bible Community Church; she loved to dance especially country and western. She was an avid musician playing organ, saxophone, accordion, piano, guitar and harmonica, an avid artist, she enjoyed feeding birds and growing mums and other flowers. She is preceded in death by her brother Peter Ottaviani.
                                                                                                                        

She is survived by her daughters Deborah (Ronald) Sanders of Waterport, NY and Rebecca (Joseph) Hoak of Alexander, 6 grandchildren Maranda Jackson of Attica, Gregory Narburgh of Oakfield, Sarah Sanders and Veronica Sanders of Waterport, Douglas Hale of East Pembroke, and Jennifer Hale of Batavia. 9 Great grandchildren, one niece Linda Sheehan of Akron, great niece Denise Prior and great nephew James Sheehan III also survive.

Virginia G. Cleveland  86,  of Albion, NY formerly of Batavia died July13, 2011 at Medina Memorial Hospital. She was born  May 14, 1925 in Batavia, NY to the late  Howard and Henrietta (Smith) Fellner.  Mrs. Cleveland worked for over 35 years at M & T Bank in Batavia.  She was a past member of St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia. She was preceded in death by  by her husband Donald Cleveland in 1998.  

Survivors include a daughter Suzanne (Ronald) Pappalardo of Oakfield, a son Donald (Madelyn) Cleveland of Georgia, a sister Delores Burroughs of Mass. and a brother Richard (Margaret) Fellner of Fld. Five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews also survive.

     Age 84, of the Town of Batavia, died peacefully Wednesday July 13, 2011 at home. He was born February 20, 1927 in Oakfield son of the late Alfred & Amy (Howard) Rumble, also preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy B. (Prentice) Rumble on Sept. 21, 2001 and by brothers Howard, Donald & Wayne. Mr. Rumble was a US Navy Veteran serving on the Destroyer USS Grayson during WWII. He was retired from Niagara Mohawk as a hot stick lineman after 40 years. He served 30 years on the Batavia Town Planning Board, 7 years on the Tax Assesment & Review Board, past president of the Loyal Order of the Moose Club and was a member of the VFW & American Legion Posts.

     Surviving are his loving children Joanne (Ronald) Spears of Bradenton, FL; Laura (Charles) Yueckstock of Batavia; Diane (Dennis) Zuch of Alexander and John (Elizabeth) Rumble of Ridgeway; brothers Kenneth of Bergen; Dale (Joan) of Batavia and a sister Glenda Klase of Oakfield; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Lena R. Palmer  96 a life time resident of Batavia died July 13, 2011 at the     Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born  March 7, 1915 in Batavia, NY to the late Charles  and Mary D'Angelo Rosica.  She was a former legal secretary for the firm of Darch and Noonan and for the late Hon. Robert E. Noonan, Supreme Court Justice.  After the untimely death of Justice Noonan, she was a Clerk for the Genesee County Board of Elections until her retirement. She was a longtime member of Ascension Parish (St. Anthony’s), it’s Altar and Rosary, St. Nicholas and St. Joseph’s Societies. Lena was preceded in death by  her husband Paul Palmer in July 1977, and she was a sister-in-law of the late Ada Rosica, Joseph and Jennie Figlow, Frank and Doris Palmer, Frances Cammarata and John and Charles Palmer.  

She is survived by her son Joseph (Marcia) Palmer and daughter Mary (Paul) Battaglia all of Batavia, brothers Sebastian Rosica of Boca Raton, Florida and Thomas (Rose) Rosica of Batavia. 7 Grandsons Paul (Annette) Palmer of Rochester, Douglas (Christa) Palmer and Steven Palmer of Batavia, Paul (Jennifer) Battaglia of Victor, Mark and Timothy Battaglia of Buffalo and Michael Battaglia of Batavia, 3 great-granddaughters Lauren, Valerie and Jillian Palmer and 2 great-grandsons, Anthony Palmer and Benjamin Battaglia who survive along with many nieces and nephews.

Gordon Alfred Hyde, 94 of Batavia, NY. Quietly passed away July 8, 2011 at his home. Born June 27, 1917 in Alabama, NY to the late Alaric (Nancy Van Epps) Hyde. Mr. Hyde served in the U.S. Army Infantry in World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was first stationed as an instructor at Fort Benning, GA, and later in the Pacific Theater, in the Philippines and Japan. He later served in the Korean War, stationed at Pusan, and was active in the Battle of Pusan Perimeter. Mr. Hyde was retired from the Oakfield-Alabama Central School district. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-six years, Ada V. Bash Hyde, brothers Arland (Esther), Wallace, Dean, Fred (Mildred), Glenn, Harold, Harvey (Ruth), and Avery Hyde, sisters Hazel (Charles) Johnson, Ada (John) Tenny and Elva Strogen, and a brother-in-law Arthur Bash.

Survivors include a son Gerald G. Hyde of Oakfield, , daughters Judith (Harry) Halpern of Fillmore, Barbara (Clinton) Worthington of Batavia and Cheryl (Jeffrey) Cotton of Elba; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law William (Eileen) Bash of Colorado; Joseph Strogen of Colorado; sisters-in-law Dorothy Bash and Myrtle Hyde of Batavia. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive, along with his constant companion, his beloved cat, Mona.

There will be no prior calling hours. Services will be held at a later date. Interment with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Deacon Robert E. Burns, 76, of Batavia, died Sunday (July 10, 2011) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Batavia after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Buffalo on June 8, 1935, a son of the late William and Ruth Panzer Burns.

Deacon Burns retired from the N.Y.S. Troopers in 1992 after 32 years. At the time of his retirement he was the Administrative Senior Investigator for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Troop A in Batavia.  He was also an Adjunct Faculty Member at Jamestown Community College, teaching  Investigative Proceedures and Interrogation.  In retirement he was a security officer at the Genesee County Building #2. From 1953 to 1955 he served with the US Army stationed in Iceland, achieving the rank of PFC. He was awarded the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal.  In addition, he obtained his Criminal Justice Degree from SUNY Buffalo. After many intense hours of studying, Bob was ordained a Permanent Deacon of the Roman Catholic Church on October 27, 1991.  He later served as Deacon at St. Peters RC Church in LeRoy and Sacred Heart Church in Batavia.  He was a member of and former Grand Knight of Msgr. Kirby Council 325 Knights of Columbus. As an avid runner he participated in numerous marathons, including the New York City Marathon.  Camping and canoeing with his family as well as enjoying the company of his extended family were some of his favorite past times. 

Surviving is his loving wife of over 51 years, Muriel Bedard, whom he married on May 14, 1960.  Two daughters and a son in law, Lori and Kirit Amin of Lansdale, PA ands Lisa Burns of Batavia.  A son and daughter in law, Wm. Brian and Renee Burns of E. Pembroke.  Nine grandchildren: Rachel, Sarah and Katie Amin, Angela Jazwiecki and Robert Burns, Ethan, Patrick, Christian and Sgt. William Burns, who is presently serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq.  One brother, James Burns of Lorraine, OH and a sister, Ruth Burns of Williamsville, NY.  He was the brother of the late William Burns, Marjorie Koepf and Mary Jane Burns.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 1 - 6 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC., 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA. .  Deacon Burns will be transfered to Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Church) at 7PM Tuesday evening.  The Office of the dead will be recited by Deacons from various parishes and visitation will continue.  Family and friends are invited. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 AM at Ascension Parish.

 Age 82, of Wichita, KS, retired onion farmer with Monachino Bros., Inc. and lifelong Genesee County resident died peacefully Thursday July 7, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was born April 28, 1929 in Elba, NY son of the late Sam & Clara (Palermo) Monachino, also preceded in death by his brother Sam Monachino Jr.; sisters Philippa Monachino, Rose Tambe and Pauline (late Walter) Rizzardi. Jim was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather who loved to travel across the U.S. and Europe. He was an avid collector of antique American items-especially clocks, metal toys and banks. His talent for fixing almost anything won him the appreciation of his neighbors and friends. Most recently Jim and his wife relocated to Kansas to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He was loved by many and will greatly missed by all.

     Surviving is his beloved wife of nearly 60 years Jine (Mitalski) Monachino of Wichita; children James S. (Melinda) Monachino of Sierra Madre, CA; Carla (Paul) Guarnere and their children Lisa, Sarah, Angela, Vera & Irina; Sandy McAllaster and her children Amanda & Jake; his brothers Paul (Rose) Monachino of Elba, Norm (Cathy) Monachino of Batavia, Joseph (Lanor Markle) Monachino of Elba; sister-in-law Ida Monachino of Batavia along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

James V. DiLaura Sr., 86 of  Batavia died July 8, 2011 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born January 15, 1925 in Batavia to the late Angelo (Angeline Tazzano) DiLaura. Mr. DiLaura worked for many years in construction as a Business Agent for the Rochester Local Union 435. He was a longtime member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church and the former St. Nicholas club in Batavia. Mr. DiLaura was a WWII Navy Veteran and Member of the VFW. He is preceded in death by his son James V. DiLaura Jr. in 2007; brothers Angelo DiLaura; Thomas and Frank Minuto; sisters Lena Cutitta and Mary Angela DiLaura.

Portland, MI. -  Paul M Tretter, 87, of Portland, MI, formally of Lewiston NY died Sunday, July 3, 2011 after a lengthy illness.

Born In Elba, NY, December 23, 1923, to the later Mathias and Helen (Meyer) Tretter, he graduated from Elba Central School and attended Cornell University.

Paul served in the US Navy Air Corp during WWII.  He married Margaret “Peggy” Morrison February 15, 1948.  They lived and raised their family in Lewiston until moving to Michigan in 2002.  Peggy passed away October 23, 2008.

Paul retired as a foreman from the NY Telephone Co.  After his retirement he had a private business installing and repairing telephones. He was a member of the NY Telephone Pioneers, served on the Board of Directors of Rivershore, Inc., a volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul Society and wa a  member of Immaculate Conception RC Church.  Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and always willing to help others.

Survivors include his children, P Brian Tretter of Lewiston, Ted (Susan) Tretter, Alabama, Marietta (Alden) Leatherman, MI, Margaret Tretter, Niagara Falls, Katie (Mike) Sootheran, Middleport, Daughter-in-law, Debbie Tretter, former Daughter-in-law, Kathy Hogan, 9 grand children, 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Isabelle Rada, Joan (Don) Moynihan), a brother Carl (Irene) Tretter, brother-in-law Kenneth Dehm.  He was predeceased by 2 sons, Mark and Christopher Tretter and 3 sisters, Mary Tretter, Sister Teresa Marie Tretter and Teresa Dehm.

John D. Williams, 76 of Batavia, NY. Died July 4, 2011 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born December 18, 1934 in Batavia, NY to the late Francis J. (Ruth A. Donahue) Williams. Mr. Williams was retired from Coca Cola Bottling Company where he worked for 35 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, an Army Veteran, a member of the DAV, and the Genesee County Police Auxiliary. He played semi pro football for 2 years and was an avid golfer. He is preceded in death by his brother Donald F. Williams, sisters Patricia Epke, Jayne Mason, Ruth Kowalik and Mary E. Luce.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Florence (Olmstead) Williams of Batavia, son John D. (Colette) Williams II of Maine, daughters Charise (James) Donahue of Batavia, Peggy (Daniel) McComb of Batavia, Christine Boyce of Rochester, Sandy Cory of Akron and Susan Stone of Akron. Also brothers James A. (Katherine) Williams, Lawrence Williams both of Batavia, sister in law Teresa Williams of Attica and brother in law John Kowalik of Batavia, who survive along with 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Florence I. Krolikowski, 83, of Batavia, died Monday (July 5, 2011) at United Memorial Medical Center.

She was born in Batavia on October 17, 1927, a daughter of the late William and Mary Wojtas Moscicki. 

Her husband, Henry Krolikowski died in August of 1997.

For many years she was a cosmetician at the former C.L. Carr Co. in Batavia and enjoyed socializing and organizing fund raisers and parties with her husband, especially for Sacred Heart Church.  She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. 

Surviving are two daughters; Darlene Krolikowski of Rochester and Eugenia (Joseph) Volino of Batavia.  A grand daughter, Krystal Volino of Buffalo. 

She was the sister of the late Eugene Moscicki who was killed in action in Korea.

Family and friends may call Friday from 9:30 am to 11 am at the J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, LLC., 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia where prayers will be at 11 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Church.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Walter E. Zielinski, 92, of Batavia, died Monday (July 4, 2011) at New York State Veterans Nursing Home in Batavia.

He was born in Batavia on November 7, 1918, a son of the late Vincent and Eleanor Twadowski Zielinski. 

Mr. Zielinski was a U.S. Army Veteran having served with the infantry in the European Theatre during WWII.   He was retired from the former Doehler-Jarvis Co. where he was a process inspector.  He devoted thousands of hours volunteering at Genesee County Nursing Home for over 37 years.  Many of his photo's of Backward Glances of Batavia were published by the Batvia Daily News. He enjoyed collecting post cards and historic photo's of Genesee County.  Walter was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church and the Holy Name Society.

Surviving is his wife of over 64 years, Gladys L. Pigula Zielinski whom he married on September 14, 1946. Two daughters and sons in law; Karen and Charles Hamill of and Patricia and Robert McJury all of Fairport.A sister in law, Mary Wozniak of Batavia.  Three grand daughters: Abigail and Stephanie McJury and Amy Hamill. Nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive. 

He is the brother of the late; Adeline Kisiel, Alfred and Anthony Zielinski.

Family and friends may call Wednesday from 3 - 7 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC., 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA,  where prayers will be Thursday at 9:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at Ascension Parish, (Sacred Heart Church).  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors.

The Sacred Heart Holy Name Society will recite the Rosary at 3PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
