Robert B. Bower

Bethany - Robert B. Bower, 82, of Bethany, a Rural Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in East Bethany, retiring in 1990 from the Post Office in Darien, died Monday, September 27, 2010at his home, while under Homecare and Hospice.

Mr. Bower was born May 30, 1928 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Fred and Belle (Bissell) Bower.
He was a 57 year member of the East Bethany Presbyterian Church and known around Bethany as “The Candy Man” as he was a great candymaker. He was a deputy Tax Collector for 44 years in the Town of Bethany, a life member and past Fire Chief, serving for 54 year with the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department, former board member and past president of the Genesee County Mutual Aid Advisory Board, member of the Western New York Firemen's Association, historian and member of the Rural Carriers Association and past secretary of the Genesee County Rural Letter Carries Association. 
He served with the Marine Corps during World War II on the Island of Guam for two years. He was called back to active duty during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the Hansen Brothers Marine Corps League Detachment #95, life member of the Veness - Strollo Post 1602 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Glenn S. Loomis Post #332 American Legion, where he also served as Chaplain. 
He is survived by his wife, Norma (Phillips) Bower whom he married on March 21, 1953; 5 children, Robert (Susan) Bower of Rush, Kathleen (Rev. Edwin) Blair of VA, Douglas L. (Dawn) Bower of Albion, Calvin (Ruth) Bower of Canadice and Daniel (Anne) Bower of Tupper Lake; 3 brothers, Donald (Audrey) Bower of N.C., David Bower of Port Leyden and Paul (Judy) Bower of Bergen; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
He is the brother of the late Dorothy Zipfel and Ruth Brown.  
Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Dale I. Heubusch

Dale I. Heubusch

SILVER SPRINGS — Dale I. Heubusch, 65, of Miller Road, Silver Springs, died Friday (Sept. 24, 2010) at his home under the loving care of his family and caretakers.

He was born Dec. 22, 1944, in North Tonawanda, a son of the late Irving and Neva Colton Heubusch. Dale was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam War. He was employed for many years as a truck driver for Marquardt Trucking in Gainesville. He was a member of the Bates-Courtney American Legion Post in Silver Springs and the Loyal Order of the Moose 560 in Warsaw. Dale was an avid NASCAR fan and he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at home with family and his beloved dogs.

Dale was predeceased by his son, Irving L. Heubusch in 2001 and his fiancé, Joyce Snyder in 2007. He was also the brother of the late Edward Stephenson and brother in law of the late Pat Heubusch.

Surviving are his daughters, Amy (Richard) Hofert of Elba, Vicki Heubusch of Warsaw; his brothers, Richard Heubusch of Warsaw, Robert (Susannah) Heubusch of Warsaw, Karson (Nancy) Heubusch of Silver Springs, Kenneth (Elaine) Heubusch of Lakeland, Fla.; his sister, Karen (Terry) Blakmon of Jupiter, Fla.; his grandchildren, Brianna Hofert, Josh Hofert, Naci Brown and Addi Brown; many nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Elmwood Cemetery, Route 19A, Silver Springs. Kenneth D. Taylor

Kenneth D. Taylor, 52, of Batavia, died Monday (September 27, 2010) at United Memorial Medical Center after a fall at his residence.

He was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on August 8, 1958 a son of the late David Rudolph and Edna Lucille Creson Taylor.

Mr. Taylor worked in the housekeeping department at Genesee Community College and was a veteran of the US Air Force.  He enjoyed watching high school football games and traveled to watch airshows and tractor pulls.

Surviving is his wife of 18 years, Karen Dyrbala Taylor whom he married on July 3, 1992.  A son, Kyle Taylor of Amherst.  Two sisters and a brother in law: Shirley Harrell of Arkansas and Betty and John Lauppe of Texas.  A brother and sister in law: David and Michelle Taylor of Kansas. His mother and father in law: Barbara and Frank Dyrbala of Alexander.  He was the brother of the late Floyd Taylor.

Ken was a "gentle-man" and had a very deep and emotional love for his wife Karen and son Kyle. 

Friends may call Wednesday from 6 - 8 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA.    Services with full military honors will be Thursday at 10 AM at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas.

Elizabeth Betty Siminski

Elizabeth Betty Siminski, 78,of Corfu died Wednesday (September 22, 2010) at Buffalo General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Buffalo on May 19, 1932, a daughter of the late George and Florence Neyerlin.

Mrs. Siminski worked for Merchants Mutual Insurance Co. in Buffalo  prior to her retirement.

She is survived by her husband Edward Siminski and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives my attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church in Akron on Tuesday at 10 AM.  Burial will follow in St. Teresa Cemetery.

Edward Frank Novack

Edward Frank Novack, 82, of Akron died Friday (September 24, 2010) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Buffalo on June 11, 1928 a son of the late Michael and Olga Steinbacher Novak.

Mr. Novack was a marine veteran of the Korean War.  He enjoyed gardening and wood working and was an avid beer stein collector.  He retired from the  Bon Ton Department Store in Buffalo where he was a warehouse worker.  

Surviving is his wife of over 53 years, Dolores Carlon Novack whom he married on December 29, 1956.  Two daughters and a son in law: Joanne and John Pullano of Amherst and Joyce Novack of Akron.  A son, Edward Novack of  New Kensington, PA.  Four grandchildren: Allison Pullano, Samantha, Nicholas and Alex Novack.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 9 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, 32 JOHN ST. AKRON.  Services will be Monday from the funeral home at 10AM followed by burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cheektowaga with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans Home of Batavia Activities Department C/O the funeral home.

William A. Rood

William A. Rood, 85, of Batavia died Saturday (September 25, 2010) at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Batavia on December 23, 1924, a son of the late Howard and Loretta Arnold Rood.

Mr. Rood was a self employed carpenter for over 20 years.  He retired from Genesee Community College maintainence department and was a security guard at Genesee County Nursing Home.  He served several times as president and treasurer of the Batavia Radio Control Flying Club of which he was a charter member.  He was a perfectionist with his woodworking and restoring antique cars that he collected.  He served with the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre. 

Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Bettie Hume Rood who died on October 22, 2000.

Surviving is his wife, Edith Roche Rood.  Two daughters: Amy Rood of Batavia and Nancy Rood of Avon.  Two grandsons: Vincent and Joseph DiSanto.  A sister, Margot Rood of Phelps, NY.  He was the brother of the late: Lois Sprague, Alvin Rood and Mildred Rood.

There are no calling hours.  Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family with burial in Hillside Cemetery in E. Pembroke.

Kenneth James McKenrick

Kenneth James McKenrick
Byron - Mr. Kenneth James McKenrick, 73, of Byron, died Saturday, (September 25, 2010)at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.
Mr. McKenrick was born September 15, 1937 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Smith and Mary (Rafferty) McKenrick.
A veteran with the United States Army, he served time in Korea. During his time with the Army, Mr. McKenrick attended the Signal School, where he served as cryptographer. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal/Expert M-1. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was recognized by the New York State Big Buck Club in 1995, earning a 10 point Whitetail Buck Recognition. On July 26, 1991, Mr. McKenrick was awarded the Heroism Award by the Western New York Volunteer Fireman's Association for saving the life of another fireman. He was a member of the American Legion, lifetime Member of the Byron Fire Department, past member of St. Michael's Church, current member of St. Brigid's Church, served as the Byron Town Supervisor for four years and was retired from Western Union in Rochester after 27 years. He carried himself with a strong tradition and faith in the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. McKenrick was well known and respected in the community. He took on many leadership positions, but above all he will be best remembered for his devotion to his loving wife, five children and his growing family. 
Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Tutokey) McKenrick of Byron, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage last fall on November 26, 2009; five children, Kenneth David (Janine) McKenrick of Batavia, Timothy Joseph (Geraldine) McKenrick of Elba, Tamara (E. James) Worthington of Byron, Kevin Lee (Kelly) McKenrick of Bergen and Kathy Marie (David) Seweryniak of Pembroke; grandchildren, Kenneth James McKenrick, Michael McKenrick, Kaylynn McKenrick, Alyssa McKenrick, E. James Worthington III, Danyelle (Nicholas) Scarborough, Brianna Worthington, Matthew McKenrick, Andrew McKenrick, Sara Seweryniak, Rachel Seweryniak and Brian Seweryniak; a great-grandchild, Gunnar Timothy Scarborough; three brothers, Daniel McKenrick of Pine City, Terrance (Donna) McKenrick of Pennsylvania and Boyd (Margaret) McKenrick of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
He is a grandfather of the late Timothy J. McKenrick.  
 
Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Prayers will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. at St. Brigid's Church, 18 Gibson Street, Bergen. Burton A. Bigsby

Burton “Burt” Bigsby, 50 of Alexander, NY. Entered into eternal rest on Friday September 24, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born September 23, 1960 in Batavia, New York he is son of the late Robert (Velma Perfitt) Bigsby. Burt was a past member of the East Pembroke Coon Hunters Association and avid outdoorsmen who enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, snowmobiles and cycling. Preceded in death by a brother-in-law Dan Merkle.
 
 He is survived by his wife Melinda (Gibbs) Bigsby, a son Jonathan Bigsby and a daughter Samantha Gibbs all of Alexander. 1 brother Barton “Bart” (Joanne) Bigsby of Alexander, NY, 2 sisters Deborah Merkle of Bethany, NY and Sheila (Stephen) McQuillen of Stafford, NY; his mother and father in law Albert (Linda) Gibbs of Batavia, who survive along with several nieces and  nephews.

Mrs. Mary Ann Caito

Batavia - Mrs. Mary Ann Caito, 73, the retired office manager for Washington Towers, died suddenly, Thursday, September 23, 2010at home.

Mrs. Caito was born December 8, 1936 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Francis and Rose Matla.
She was a member of Resurrection Parish where she currently served on the Parish Council and was a former trustee of St. Mary’s Church. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Joseph Sodality and the Batavia Garden Club. A member of the UMMC League she served as its' Treasurer for over 40 years and also volunteered with the Girl Scouts.
 She was predeceased by her husbands, Paul Caito in 1960 and A. Edward Caito in 2004.
Survivors include one son; Paul (Cathleen) Caito of Ohio; one daughter; Kathryn (Lee) Liolios of Lancaster, NY and a sister, Joan MacKenzie of West Seneca. She was the grandmother of Lindsay (Chris) Dunlap, Chelsea, Mitchell and Jake Caito and Sophia Liolios.
 There will be no prior visitation. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, 9:30 am at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church. Memorials may be made to Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., or the United Memorial Medical Center League, 123 North St., both Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Arrangements completed by the H. Esther Evelyn Phelps Schaal

Oakfield and Winter Haven, FL- Mrs. Esther Evelyn Phelps Schaal, 95, of Oakfield and Winter Haven, FL, a Registered Nurse at the former Genesee Memorial Hospital, in Batavia for 12 years prior to her retirement in 1985, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 while under hospice care in Auburndale, FL.
 

Mrs. Schaal was born May 6, 1915 in Pembroke, NY, the daughter of the late Dennis and Mary (Klotzbach) Phelps.
 

She was a member of Indian Falls United Methodist Church, associate member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Florida since 1985, East Pembroke Grange and was the former secretary of the Genesee County Fair.
 

Her husband, Warren R. Schaal, died August 25, 2004.
 

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie (Lee) Schoenthal of Corfu; 2 sons, Dean (Jane) Schaal of Oakfield and Dale (Mary) Schaal of Winterhaven, FL; a brother, Wayne (Myra) Phelps of Basom; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
 

She was the grandmother of the late Cherie Schoenthal and sister of the late Revere Phelps, Maurice Phelps and Virgil Phelps.

MR. LAVERNE S. "BUTCH" HALE

Batavia - Mr. LaVerne S. “Butch” Hale, 90, of Batavia, retired inspector at Doehler-Jarvis Division of National Lead in Batavia, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 under the care of HomeCare & Hospice.
Mr. Hale was born July 24, 1920 in Oakfield, a son of the late Howard L. and Margaret A. Rutter Hale.
He was a member of Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, the quarter century club at Doehler-Jarvis, the Good Sam Club and the former Moose Lodge in Batavia. An avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, he volunteered at the Senior Center and Msgr. Kirby Lunch Program. Following his retirement from Doehler-Jarvis in 1975, Mr. & Mrs. Hale resided in Florida from 1979-1993.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Norma L. Foster Hale whom he married September 16, 1944; a son, Richard L. (Sheila) Hale of Batavia; two daughters, Margaret (Frank) Zambito of Elba and Patricia Diaz of Batavia; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Gordon) Amidon and Doris Pask, both of Batavia and Peggy Foster of Crofton, Maryland; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Larry (Sandi) Hale.
He is the father of the late Daniel F. Hale who died in 1978 and brother of the late Lawrence Hale.  
There are no prior calling hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to Lake Plains Dialysis Center, 587 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020 or HomeCare & Hospice, 550 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Norman E. Fagnan

Oakfield - Mr. Norman E. Fagnan, 72, of Oakfield, died Monday, (September 20, 2010)at home while under the care of HomeCare and Hospice.
Mr. Fagnan was born March 27, 1938 in Buffalo, the son of the late Norman and Catherine (Hutchins) Fagnan.
Mr. Fagnan was a former superintendent at Oakfield - Alabama Central School. He was a member of Saint Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Church, where he sang in the church choir, was a lector and belonged to the Men's Group. Mr. Fagnan was also a member of the Oakfield Lions Club, GCASA, Western New York School Study Council, New York State Council of School Administrators and was a past trustee and president of the Haxton Memorial Library. He enjoyed reading, playing tennis, traveling and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Alice (Zynczak) Fagnan of Oakfield, whom he married July 2, 1960; a daughter, Michele (Guy) Boretti of Glenville; a son, Michael (Ana) Fagnan of Amherst; three grandchildren, Melina Boretti, Sofia Fagnan and Christopher Fagnan; two sisters, Kathy (Ken) Melston of Rockwall, Texas and Mary (Michael) Krickminer of Fairport; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Parrinello of Huntington and several nieces and nephews.
He is the father of the late Leslie Ann Fagnan.

Ann Perry

Ann Perry, 78 of Corfu, NY, died September 21, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center. Born September 14, 1932 in Lackawanna, New York, daughter of the late William (Agnes Clements) Grace. Mrs. Perry was a Telephone Operator for 25 years at New York Telephone. Preceded in death by two husbands Donald Smart in 1966 and William Perry in 1991. 
 
She is survived by son David (Rosana) Smart of CA; daughters Carol Sue (Douglas) Yaeger of Indian Falls; Marianne Smart of E. Pembroke; a sister Mary Grace Fargo of Batavia; grandchildren Jennifer Smart, Jaclyn Smart, David Smart, Ashley Dinger, Juliann Yaeger, one special step-grandson Daniel Perry, great-granddaughter Sara Pina along with several nieces and nephews. 
 
Friends are invited to call from 11 AM to 1 PM on Friday September 24, 2010 at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 W. Harriet Kathryn (Carson/MacRae) Longchamps

Harriet Kathryn (Carson/MacRae) Longchamps left this life peacefully on Sunday, September 19, 2010. She was born March 23, 1925 to Francis & Kathryn (Keenan) Carson of Buffalo, NY but rooted to Batavia for the majority of her adult life. She worked several jobs, but those who knew her will always remember her as being owner/operator of Longchamps Telephone Answering Service in Batavia from the mid 1960’s until its close in the late 1980’s. Her soothing, bass voice was a perfect match for the phone lines. 
 
She weathered many adversities in life, but never fell prey to self pity. Choosing, instead, to meet the challenges, gather strength from her trials & find the good in every living moment. 
 
If any single attribute could define her, it would be motherhood and its continuous ripples from one generation through to the next, over and again. Her legacy lies not only in her own children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, but in the innumerable other young ones that she pulled into the fold. 
 
She will be remembered for her countless tabletop coffee consultations, her endless supply of tales to tell and her enormous heart and humor. 
 
She was predeceased by her son, Kelly Longchamps who, no doubt, will have a room ready for her & a cup of coffee waiting. 
 
She is survived by her sons; James D. (Joan) MacRae III of Batavia; Eric J. (Raylene) MacRae of FL; Patrick (Peggy Berndt) MacRae of Verona; as well as her daughters Ellen (Steven) Hagen; Kathleen Longchamps of Batavia; Kristine Flicker of Newport Beach, CA. She also leaves behind grandchildren James, Patrick & Bridget MacRae, Jocelyn McKim, Nicholas, Margaret & Grace Flicker, Bevan, Ethan, Martin, Emma & Adah Hagen, Rachael Ciociola, Tammy Morgan & Tina Hartgrove, as well as several great & great-great-grandchildren.

Bernard Alan Squires

Bernard Alan Squires, 57 of Conroe Texas entered into eternal rest on Friday September 10, 2010. Born November 30, 1952 in Batavia New York, son of the late John Edwin "Ed" Squires and Teresa George Squires of  Warsaw. Bernard attended Albion Central High School and was awarded both bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry from Niagara University. His passion for science and computers led him to an international career in technology, most recently with Baker Hughes of Houston where he was laboratory manager. 
 
In addition to his mother he is survived by his brothers John (Mary) Squires of Brockport, Gregory (Sandra) Squires and Jeffrey (Sara) Squires all of Prattsburgh, his sister Barbara (Joseph) Sanguiliano of Manalapan, New Jersey, and loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. 
 
There will be no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday September 25, 2010 at 10:00AM at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph’s), 303 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
 
 In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
