LONA R. POMEROY – Age 95, of LeRoy, formerly of Unadilla, NY, died peacefully Thursday morning January 1, 2015 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home. She was born July 15, 1919 in Wells Bridge, NY to the late Arthur and Jessie (Burroughs) Root, also preceded in death by her husband, Carleton Pomeroy, Jr. in 2014, siblings, Adelbert Root and Ethel Mirick.  

   Mrs. Pomeroy spent all her married life in Unadilla until she and her late husband moved to the Village Green last year. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at JW Van Cott & Son, Inc. in Unadilla and Sidney, NY where she was known for her meticulous record keeping. She retired in 1982. After her retirement she started piano lessons, and also began a successful career as an Avon Representative. She was a member of the Unadilla Women's Club, past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was an avid bowler. Lona will be remembered for her patient and kind heart, always there to listen and forever a hand to help those in need.

   Surviving are her beloved daughters, Diane (William E.) Wormsley of Pittburgh, PA and Laraine (William E.) Caton of Batavia; cherished grandchildren, Edward J. (Paula) Caton of Stafford, Ellen C. (Adam) Brokaw of Batavia and Patai B. (Stephanie) Wormsley of Harrisburg, PA; great-grandchildren, Carson, Carly & Bailey.

   The Pomeroy family will be present from 4-6 p.m. on Monday January 5, 2015 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020. Graveside services will be announced in the spring for burial in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla, NY where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved Carleton. Morganville ~ Thelma M. Barnard Urbaniak, beloved mother and friend, peacefully died on December 31, 2014 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia with visits from loving family and friends. She was 98 years old.

    

Thelma was born October 1, 1916 in Rochester, NY and was the only daughter of the late Edward and Ethel Barnard. She was predeceased by her former husband John Ernst and husband Harry Urbaniak.

     She is survived by her daughter Terri Ann Ernst of Stafford, her daughter and son-in-law by choice, Brenda and Masami Iburi of Stafford, her god-daughter, Beverly Rogers of Bergen, along with many loving nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her dearest friends, Debbie and Dennis Kellogg of Stafford and Dan Shaver and Chuck Mansfield of Stuart, FL also survived her.

     Thelma was employed by Ames Department Stores for 32 years until she was 86 years old. She developed many close friendships through her job. She enjoyed traveling, especially by train. She was an avid reader, loved attending concerts, plays, eating out, and animals, especially her cats Babe and Ginger. She touched so many lives with her beautiful soul and inspiring stories. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in LeRoy.

Rose J. Ferrando, 92, of Batavia passed away Thursday January 1, 2015 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on November 3, 1922 in Batavia to the late Daniel (Jennie Battaglia) Menne. She is preceded in death by her husband Carmen M. Ferrando Sr. in 2004 and her sister Nelda Menne.

Rose was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Rose was a chairperson for Catholic Charities and a member of the former St. Michael’s Society. She loved spending time with her family, cooking, baking, and playing cards. 

Rose is survived by her children Debbie (Frank) Ficarella, Roselle (Frank) Minuto, Carmen (Mindy) Ferrando Jr. and Daniel Ferrando all of Batavia; sisters Ann Nicosia of Batavia; Audrey Dodd of FL; 4 grandchildren Amy (Dave) Murray, Chad (Erica) Minuto, Meghan (Dale) Pearce, Chris Ferrando; 5 great-grandchildren Sara Murray, Owen Murray, Sophia Minuto, Landon Minuto, and Camdyn Ferrando along with many nieces and nephews.

Steven J. Coraci, age 61, died on January 1, 2015 at Crossroads House in Batavia, New York.  He is survived by his wife, Lisa M. Kroemer, of Stafford, New York; his son, Dustin J. Weiderman, of Rochester, New York, his sisters, Carol Rapone of Caledonia, New York, Joanne (Gregory) Albert of Henrietta, New York and Jacqueline (Kevin) Green of Plano, Texas, his nieces and nephews and their children, aunts and uncles, and his little dogs, Trixie and Max.

Steve was a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; he served in the United States Marine Corps 1972-75.  His work life was spent primarily with Eastern Airlines, CharterOne Bank and Paychex.   He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia and most recently a volunteer with our local BID Council.

Steve will be remembered for many wonderful attributes, his integrity, honesty, humility and perseverance.  Most of all he will be greatly missed for his dedication and loyalty to his family and friends and his incredible sense of humor. 

Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road, Pittsford (please assemble at the entrance gate).

LeRoy ~ Alice C. Rubino, age 81, of Keeney Road, passed away  Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 30, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

     Mrs. Rubino was born May 2, 1933 in Pearl Creek, a daughter of the late Michael and Martha Bergholtz Shimburske.

     She will be remembered as the hardworking business partner, who with her husband, Augie, operated Rubino's Open Air Market in LeRoy for many years.

     She is survived by sisters-in-law, Connie Capuano of Batavia, Sarah (Ronald) Dusing of Rochester and Patty Rubino of Bergen, a special nephew and niece, Frank (Ann) Capuano of Batavia, along with many  nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Augustine "Augie" Rubino on April 29, 2014, a brother, Albert (Geraldine) Shimburske, sisters, Irene and Agnes Shimburski, brothers-in-law, Frank Rubino and Salvatore Capuano and sister-in-law, Rose Marie Gervase.

     Family and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Joseph's Oratory, 27 Lake Street, LeRoy. Interment will be private in St. Francis Cemetery.

Mary Helen Kilpatrick, 82, of the Town of Pavilion, NY passed away at her home, on

December 30, 2014 from Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), resulting from a severe immune deficiency, arising from various treatments she had undergone.

     Since 2003, Mary Helen fought courageous battles with three different forms of cancer, each in turn ending in remission.  In 2009 a fall severely damaged her left ankle, which could not be repaired through surgery, thus resulting in her being wheelchair bound.

     Mary Helen Kilpatrick was born April 19, 1932 at Sayre, PA, the daughter of the late Homer B. Rutherford and Mary T. (Stiles) Rutherford.

     She graduated from Amherst High School, Amherst, NY in 1950 and from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1954 with a BS Degree in Music Education.  Mary Helen taught vocal music first at Cassadaga Valley Central School, Sinclairville, NY, then at Lancaster Central School, Lancaster, NY and later at Royalton-Hartland Central School, Middleport, NY.

     While at Royalton-Hartland, Mary Helen assisted in the school musical productions, first in staging, then in leading the pit orchestra.  She also did the same for several Middleport Rotary Musicals and the Lake Plains Players.  Mary Helen was a founding member of the Middleport Community Choir.

     She was very active in the former St. Stephen's Catholic Church while living in Middleport, NY.  Serving as choir director and helped in the development of several parish ministries.  For 36 years she played French horn in the Amherst (NY) Symphony Orchestra.

     On April 28, 2002, Mary Helen was among some 40 others who were honored with the "Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker" by Bishop Henry J. Mansell at the Diocesan Cathedral in Buffalo, NY for their outstanding and dedicated service to the Church over many years.

     In 2002, Mary Helen and her Husband, Bob, built a retirement home in the LeRoy-Pavilion (NY) area.  Here as a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, LeRoy, NY she sang in the choir and again developed two parish ministries.

     Mary Helen had a special interest in gardening, growing roses and various spring and summer flowers.  She maintained a year around bird feeder to attract various birds in season and was very knowledgeable of the many types that visited.  She was an active participant in the Covington Daylighters, a craft group, until her recent illness.

     She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert T., four children; Kathryn Anne (Laurence) Symenow of Winchester, VA, Geoffrey Robert (Catherine) Lewis of Reston, VA, Dion Andrew (Lisa) Lewis of Amherst, NH.  These three were raised by the Kilpatrick's (Uncle & Aunt) upon the sudden death of their parents, Gordon and Mary Elizabeth (Kilpatrick) Lewis in an automobile accident, and Margaret Mary (Douglas) Thater of LeRoy, NY.  Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.  Also surviving is a sister, Janet Fuller and a niece, Katherine R. Fuller, both of Maryland, and another sister, Margaret Traynor Rutherford of Greene, NY.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter's Site, 44 Lake Street, LeRoy, NY.  Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, LeRoy.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the form of mass cards.

Ronald C. Blythe, age 73, of Batavia formerly of Perry, died on Monday December 29, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born in Warsaw, New York on July 2, 1941 a son of the late J. Milton "Skip" and Marie (Reed) Blythe.

Ronald was a graduate of Perry High School, and he attended SUNY Alfred. He owned and operated Ron’s Heating and Plumbing in Perry for many years. He was a former member of the Perry Fire Department. Ronald was a Ham radio operator and a pilot. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying planes and riding motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette whom he married on July 26, 1990; son David of Rochester; 2 step-sons Jeremy (Karrie) Freeman of Henrietta and Nathan (Michelle) Behr of Sandy Hook, CT.; sister Jeanne (William) Gilbride of The Villages, Fla.; 3 brothers: Richard (Diane) Blythe of The Village, Fla., William (Linda) Blythe of Warsaw and Gary (Diane) Blythe of York; 4 step-grandchildren Olivia and Griffen Freeman, Trent and Sloan Behr along with many nieces and nephews.

IDA "LUCILLE" CAPAMAGGIO – Age 87, of Byron, died Monday morning December 29, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born September 24, 1927 in Rochester, NY to the late Harry and Myrtle (Snyder) Kimball, also preceded in death by her husband Louis Capamaggio in 2012, siblings, Edna O'Keefe, Almon Kimball, Amy Baker, Chris Cipolla, Doris Kimball, Irene Minges.  

   Lucille was an avid reader, played the piano, sewed and knitted, she loved to sit outside enjoying nature to pass the time.

   Surviving are her children, Susan (John) Devery of Churchville, Gerard Capamaggio of Clarendon, Linda Elder of NC, Diane Kinder of PA, Patti (David) Coan of Byron, Philip Capamaggio of WV and Kevin (Debbie) Capamaggio of NC, over 100 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren survive along with many loving nieces and nephews.

DOROTHY C. MOYNIHAN - 80, of Batavia, died Saturday evening December 27, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center with her loving daughter and granddaughter at her side. She was born July 24, 1934 in Alexander, NY to the late Charles and Margaret (Gilhooly) Buckenmeyer, also preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Moynihan in 2012; infant children, Edward, Patrick & Mary; siblings, Elizabeth and Charles Buckenmeyer, Mary (late Larry) Falkowski and Lucy Moag.

   Dorothy was a 1952 graduate of Alexander Central School, a longtime member of Resurrection Parish (St. Mary's) and the Catholic Daughters. A proud and caring woman who was always there to help family, friends or anyone in need. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and shopping, she also loved to dance and never turned down a good party. She will be remembered for her quick wit, great sense of humor, and kind heart. Her beloved grandchildren were the light of her life and she adored spending time with them. Dorothy in the last couple of years struggled with many health issues but did so with dignity and grace and she did all her life, one of her final wishes was to enjoy lobster at the Red Osier, which she enjoyed greatly with her family.

   Surviving is her caregiver and beloved daughter, Elizabeth (Russell) Brinkman of Alexander; 2 cherished grandchildren, Chelsey Patricia and Russell Edward; siblings, Catherine Raines of Alexander, Francis (late Joan) Buckenmeyer of Alexander, George (Dorothy) Buckenmeyer of FL, Margaret (James) Hofmann of Attica, Bernard (Geraldine) Buckenmeyer of Alexander; sisters-in-law, Violet Buckenmeyer of Darien, Frances (late Richard) Driscoll of Batavia and Agnes (Ralph) Houseknecht of Stafford along with several nieces and nephews.

   Liz and her family will be present from 3-8 p.m. Friday January 2, 2015 at the MICHAEL S. Anastasia Rumsey, 96, of Perry died on December 27, 2014 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, New York.  She was born in Jermyn, Pennsylvania on August 13, 1918 a daughter of the late John and Mary (Kutch) Rusiniak.  Mrs. Rumsey taught piano out of her home for over 58 years. She studied music at Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA and voice at The Conservatory of Music in Scranton, PA.  She was an active member of the Baptist Church of Perry. She sang in the choir since 1946 and played piano for many services and occasions, taught Sunday school, was a deaconess, and was a member of the “Mutuals Friends” and “Class Original” clubs through the church. 

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Maurice W. Rumsey who died in 1999, a son-in-law Edward Cohen and siblings John and Andrew Rusiniak and Mary Waibel.

She is survived by her daughter Darlene Cohen of King of Prussia, PA.; her son Paul (Gail) Rumsey of Naples;  a sister Elizabeth Wargo of Olyphant, Pa.; 2 grandchildren  Leanne (Ben) Loyd of Acton, Mass. and Matthew Bergey of NYC  along with several nieces and nephews.

Richard F. Thomas, 68, of Perry died on Friday December 26th at his home in Perry. He was born on February 25, 1946 in Rochester, New York a son of the late Edward F. and Bernadine R. (Houck) Thomas.  Richard had worked for the former Sonyea State Home in Sonyea as a cook.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching TV, playing chess and painting on glass.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a sister and her husband Bernadine (William) Jackson

He is survived by his wife Shirley D. (Schafer) Thomas whom he married on January 27, 1979, a daughter Katrina Thomas of Dansville, a step-son  Lance (Christine) Lawton of Perry; 2 step daughters Marcia (Charles Thomas) Lawton of Arkport, Mona (Robert) Lawton-Yott of Bath; a sister Sue Thomas of Perry; 4 brothers Edward (Mary) Thomas of Brockport, Robert Thomas of Fl., Kenneth Thomas of Rochester, Gordon (Donna) Thomas of Avon, along with several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

James Edward Soggs Sr., 78, died Monday December 29, 2014 in Batavia. James was the son of the late Marvin and Elizabeth Soggs. He was born May 22, 1936 in Saltville,Virginia. He is preceded in death by two sisters Mrs. Jennie Eva Worley, Mrs. Kathleen Austin; three brothers Roscoe Soggs, Marvin Soggs and George Patterson.

James and his two brothers came to Batavia to work at the US Gypsum in Oakfield. He settled in Batavia where he raised his family. James was professional truck driver for 33 years, retiring from Emerson Express in 1997. James was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

James is survived by his loving wife Onie Ruth Soggs; sons David (Ellie) Soggs of Buffalo, James E. Soggs Jr. of Batavia; two step sons Robert Burney of TX, Tom (Jackie) Burney of FL; daughters Lisa Soggs of Buffalo, Cynthia (Robert) Thurston of Batavia; step daughter Cassandra Burney of GA; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

LeRoy ~ Oliver P. Cooper Jr., age 91, of Genesee Street, passed away Sunday afternoon (Dec. 28, 2014) at the home of his son, surrounded by his loving family.

     Mr. Cooper was born December 26, 1923 in Henrietta, N.Y., a son of the late Oliver and Alice Burns Cooper Sr.

     He was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, who supported and attended all of his children's and grandchildren's events.  He was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during WW II, earning the good conduct medal and the Bronze Star.  He was a member of the LeRoy American Legion and was an avid golfer.

     He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Grace Ingalls Cooper, a son, Ricky (Laurie) Cooper of Stafford; grandchildren, Denny (Shannon) Yauchzee, Ricky (Kelly) Cooper, Amy Cooper, Abbey (Dave) Cooper Wilson, Katie (Bill) Bogan, Larry (Sarah) Mclaughlin, Luke Yauchzee and Gavin Yauchzee; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Tommy and Scott Cooper, Hanna and Brooklyn Wilson, Taylor and Cole Yauchzee, Will and John Bogan; great-great-grandchild, Chloe Parker; sister, Betty (Connie) Snyder of LeRoy, sister-in-law, Janice Cooper of LeRoy, along with several nieces and nephews.

     Mr. Cooper was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Yauchzee; his brothers, Franklin Cooper, John, Walter "Bea" and Stanley Unamen and his sisters, Harriett Huntley and Arleen Ingalls.

Ann L. Pirro, 98, of Batavia passed away Sunday December 28, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on August 6, 1916 in Lawrence, MA to the late Angelo (Lucia Pappalardo) Borzi. She is preceded in death by her husband Norfe J. Pirro; sons Salvatore J. Pirro, Thomas D. Pirro and her brother Tony Borzi.

Ann worked as a Maternity Nurse’s Aide at St. Jerome’s Hospital prior to retirement. She was a member of Ascension Parish and Focal Point Member. Ann enjoyed her time at St. Elizabeth Gardens in Florida, crocheting, ceramics, and playing bingo.  She was an excellent cook, and loved shopping for gifts for her family.

Ann is survived by her children Lucy A. Pirro of Corona, CA; David N. (Donna) Pirro of Eustis, FL; Diane L. Calarco of Pompano Beach, FL; Mark S. Pirro of Van Nuys, CA; sisters Mary Meleca of Batavia; Josephine (Jack) Gianni of FL, Rose Marie Borzi of MA; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Friday January 2, 2015 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc., 329-333 West Main St. Batavia New York. An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday January 3, 2015 at Ascension Parish 15 Sumner Street Batavia, New York 14020. Entombment will take place in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum.

LeRoy ~ Maureen A. Weatherbee, age 65, of Genesee Street, passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon (Dec. 25, 2014).

   

  Mrs. Weatherbee was born February 16, 1950 in Batavia, a daughter of the late John and Betty Tiffany Moynihan.

     She will be remembered as a loving wife and caring person, who loved people.

     She is survived by her husband of 20 years, William G. Weatherbee; her sons, Gary (Denise) Guiste of Batavia and Patrick (Bethany) Guiste of Batavia; a stepson, Raymond Weatherbee of TX; her sister, Liz (Fritz) Rowsick of Bergen; 5 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
