Old-style all-you-can-eat breakfast at Bethany Community Center March 29 to benefit Bethany Volunteer Fire Department

The old-style breakfast is back!

The Bethany Volunteer Fire Department will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 29 at the Bethany Community Center.

Cost is $9 for adults;$5 for children 7 to 12; and kids 6 and under eat free.

Enjoy scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, pancakes, sausage gravy and biscuits, and home fries!

All proceeds benefit the Bethany Volunteer Fire Company.

Bethany Community Center is located at 10510 Bethany Center Road in East Bethany.

GO ART! awards state grants for music, murals and more

On Tuesday GO ART! held a ceremony to award funds to recipients of the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Regrant Program.

Below are the Genesee County recipients.

Reach Grants were awarded to:

  • Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble (Concert Season 2020 Mr. Mustard Beatles Cover Band Collaboration) -- $4,395
  • Genesee Symphony Orchestra ("Destinations") -- $4,650
  • Arc of Genesee Orleans (Film Festival and Art Show) -- $4,425
  • Holland Purchase Historical Society (Holland Land Office Museum Guest Speaker and Concert Series, Mystery Theater) -- $1,000

  • Woodward Memorial Library (Summer Arts Camp) -- $1,500
  • Genesee Chorale (2020 Series) -- $5,000

The lone Spark Grant recipient is:

  • Bart Dentino ("The Spaces Between the Leaves") -- $2,500
  • Mandy Humphrey (Routes 19 & 5 Mural) -- $2,500
  • Eric Zwieg ("Slow Moving Grief") -- $2,500

All the awardees were grateful for the funding, which will help provide cultural and artistic programming to benefit the local community. It will also help create new works, and boost arts education for K-12 public school students.

Pauli Miano, a member of the Elba Betterment Committee, is delighted because the grant will allow her community to put on seven concerts in Elba's park this summer. Miano wrote the grant request along with another committee member, Kelly Dudley, who first suggested it.

The Elba concerts will feature area musicians, and there will be food and theme-related activities at each, most of which will be provided by local nonprofits, school groups, and businesses and restaurants.

Miano says all the bands have been booked and some other commitments have been made -- rock paintings ("Rock out with Bobby and the Pedestrians"), wine and cheese with Jimmie Leggs (jazz); and a car cruise. Shows start in June with The Corfu Pembroke Community Band (All- American theme) and run through August.

ACORNS invites you to enjoy snowshoeing on the trails of GC Park & Forest

Everyone is invited to come explore 12 miles of trails in the 431-acre Genesee County Park and Forest in East Bethany. Wintertime hiking is especially beautiful.

Snowshoes must be used. You may bring your own or rentals are available at the Interpretive Nature Center December through March, weather permitting: starting at 10 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays; 12 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Ending time for all days is 3 p.m.

Sizes are available for age 3 and up.

Fee: $5/person. All proceeds go to the ACORNS group supporting the parks -- the Association for Conservation of Recreational and Natural Spaces Inc. The park and forest are not handicapped accessible.

Holland High Lift in East Bethany installs wind turbine

Press release:

Holland High Lift Inc. is proud to announce that a 25-kilowatt wind turbine was installaed at their facility in East Bethany by Buffalo Renewables out of Amherst.

The clean energy from this turbine will be used to run our offices, repair shop, and to recharge the portion of our rental equipment fleet that is battery charged. These systems use net metering, which means on windy days when we make an energy surplus that electricity gets sent to National Grid for others to use.

This gives us a credit of electricity from the grid for days with little or no wind.

Going forward this turbine should provide for the majority of our electricity needs.

All things paranormal offered along Haunted History Trail of NYS

Along the Haunted History Trail of New York State, you will find the largest collection of haunted and Halloween events statewide.

Three sites on the trail are in Genesee County: the historic Seymour Place building at 201 E. Main St. in Downtown Batavia, home to GO ART!; Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany; and the Haunted Bergen House, built in 1858 and located at 6571 W. Sweden Road, Bergen.

More than 500 events -- from authentic ghost hunts and paranormal investigations to staged haunted houses and Halloween hayrides -- can be found on the Haunted History Trail's online event calendar, offered now through the end of October.

Ghost hunting is offered year-round in historic Palmyra and its William Phelps General Store, with special events in the fall.

Home to all things paranormal, 365 days a year, the Haunted History Trail features more than 90 authentically haunted locations across the state. These locations offer investigations, ghost hunts, guided tours, and other experiences that allow visitors to interact with the haunted side and seek out spirits during a dining experience, special event, or overnight stay.

But, during the "spooky season" in the time leading up to Halloween, the trail opens its offerings to all forms of haunted events -- from the serious spirits right down to the spirited pretenders.

"We see a lot of attention this time of year due to the season and the nature of our trail," says Kelly Rapone, administrator of the Haunted History Trail.

"People are seeking out opportunities to be scared -- whether that's on a guided tour that tells them about ghost sightings and the history behind them or experiencing a jump-scare as they go through a haunted house. We want to be their resource for all things haunted."

While many of the trail events lead up to Halloween as the major fall holiday, Sept. 28 also marks a holiday celebrated by select Haunted History Trail partners. It's "National Ghost Hunting Day," established in 2016, which "recognizes and celebrates the novice, curious and expert execution of ghost-hunting methods."

Several trail locations, including Palmyra's William Phelps General Store, East Bethany's Rolling Hills Asylum, and the Haunted Hinsdale House in Hinsdale, participate on that date in the "World's Largest Ghost Hunt" -- an international phenomenon that brings people together from across the globe to take part in a night of paranormal investigations.

Themes for the 2019 event will include historic preservation, celebrating haunted towns, and exploring cultural diversity within the ghost-hunting field around the world.

It is the only statewide ghost tourism initiative in the United States. It was created in 2013 by the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with tourism promotion agencies across the state and with support provided by Empire State Development's I LOVE NEW YORK program under the Market NY initiative.

The Haunted History Trail of New York State features more than 90 haunted locations found within almost every region of New York State. Guided ghost tours, paranormal investigations, haunted dining and overnight stays are available on the trail, with many of the attractions tying back to New York's local history.

Night Sky Tour and stargazing offered next month at GC Park and Forest

East Bethany – Enjoy the view of a dark night sky and get to know the summer’s constellations with Night Sky Tour and Stargazing at the Genesee County Park and Forest from 9 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9th.

Learn all about the Perseid meteor shower and other astronomical phenomenon and the folklore behind them!

Meet us at the Interpretive Nature Center for an outdoor presentation and guided tour of the night sky.

Bring a blanket or a chair for your spot in a meadow far away from city lights. This program will take place entirely outdoors.

If rain or cloudy skies threaten our view we will reschedule to Friday, Aug. 16th. Cost is $5/person, $10/family. Preregistration is required, call 585-344-1122 to reserve your spot.

East Bethany's Beth Britton reenlists in NY Army National Guard

LATHAM -- Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.

Sergeant Beth Britton from East Bethany reenlisted to continue service with the Company C, 1-171st Aviation Regiment.

"It's great to see soldiers staying in the Army and continuing to serve their State and Nation in the New York Army National Guard," Shields said. "The most important Army asset we have is the individual soldier. The dedication, skills, and leadership traits they bring to our community and their employers are invaluable.

"By choosing to stay in the Army National Guard they directly contribute to our nation's security and to the governor's ability to respond to disasters, all while building a bright future for their family through the Guard's retirement, education, and health insurance programs."

Spring is in the air and so is chicken BBQ season! Mary Immaculate Parish in East Bethany announces its 2019 chicken BBQ schedule:

  • Sunday, March 17
  • Sunday, April 28
  • Sunday, May 19

Meals are available starting at 10:45 a.m. until sold out.

Meals include: a half chicken (barbecued to perfection on our outdoor grills), a baked potato, vegetable, coleslaw, roll, coffee, tea, with piece of cake or pie for dessert.

Cost is $11 for adults; $7 for children 12 and under.

A $7 chicken-only take-out is also available.

The church is located at 5865 Ellicott St. Road (Route 63) in East Bethany.

Winter Wonderland Hikes planned at GC Park & Forest, must preregister

Discover the wonders of winter with hikes at the Genesee County Park & Forest! Track the secret lives of wild animals and seek out the brave birds that spend winter in Western New York! Winter Wonderland Hikes are held on Saturdays from 1:30 pm to 3 p.m.

  • Saturday, Jan. 19th: Animal Tracks & Signs (*Bad weather date: Saturday Jan. 26th)
  • Saturday, Feb.16th: Winged Wildlife (*Bad weather date: Saturday Feb. 23rd)

Hikes will go, snow or no snow. Hikes begin at the Interpretive Nature Center and end with hot chocolate and snacks. Snowshoes may be used, weather permitting, and are available for rent or you may bring your own. Snowshoeing lesson provided, no previous experience needed! Rental is included in the price, $5/person, $15 max/family. Recommended for ages 3 and up! Pre-registration is required, call 585-344-1122!
