Pembroke senior Kilian Lewis, captain of the track and field team, earned third place in the Class D2 state championship this past Friday with a discus throw of 159' 8". The finish earned him a spot in the Federation Games on Saturday, and he earned third, among all schools, large and small, with a throw of 161'.

Lewis, who holds the school record with a throw of 164' 6.5", will compete for St. John Fisher College next year.

The Batavia High School wrestling team, and boys and girls track teams, were honored by the City School District board on Tuesday night with proclamations for their 2016-17 Section V titles.

Members of the Batavia Blue Devils indoor track team performed well at the NYS champions Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

Anthony Ray placed ninth in the shot put with an overall throw of 50' 10". In the weight throw, an event he holds the record in for Section V, he earned all-state honors by placing sixth in the NY Federation and fourth among state competitors with a throw of 62' 7". That is his second-best throw ever and led all WNY competitors. He will compete in the shot put and weight throw next weekend at the Indoor National Championships at the Armory in Manhattan.

The girls 4x400 relay team finished ninth with a time of 4:04.11, which broke an existing school record. They also qualified for nationals next week. The team is Claire Zickl, Regan Henrici, Brianna Bromley and Kiaya Franklin.

Nate Crane is a team of one for Letchworth, so he trained with Batavia this season. In the pole vault he placed sixth in the NY Federation and fourth among state competitors. He cleared 14' 6" and will also compete next week at nationals.

Three Batavia track and field athletes will be competing in the 2016 NYSPHSAA Track & Field Championships, today and tomorrow, June 10-11, at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Anthony Ray (pictured far left) has had a very dominant spring in the throwing events for the Blue Devils as he was undefeated in the Shot Put and Discus during our Monroe County League schedule, earned 1st Team All Monroe County, and also won Shot and Disc at the Section V Championships.

Batavia has had a boy or girl thrower compete at the State meet, both indoors and outdoors every year under throws Coach Dan Geiger. The Blue Devil's track team is recognized as having a very strong Throws Program over the past decade. Anthony was fortunate to qualify for the Indoor State Championships in the Shot Put and Indoor Nationals in the Weight Throw this past winter and will compete in the Shot and Disc today. He goes into the meet seeded ninth in Shot and 11th in Disc.

Kiaya Franklin will be on the track for her two events as she qualified in the 200m and the 400m. Both of these events will be held today, with the chance to qualify for the finals on Saturday. Kiaya is also coming off a State meet performance for Indoor Track this past winter. Earlier this outdoor season, she captured Section V championships in the 100m, 200m, and 400m. She goes into the State meet this weekend seeded sixth in both her events with a very good chance to medal in both.

Adonis Davis (pictured far right) will compete for the first time at the State Championships for track and field and is seeded third in the Triple Jump. He is coming off a very impressive season having earned 1st team Monroe County in Triple and High Jump and won Sectionals in both events as well. Adonis is considering competing in track and field at Brockport State next year.

All three Batavia athletes helped the track team win Sectional Championships two weeks ago and now have the opportunity for some individual success at States. Good luck to our Blue Devil athletes this weekend in Syracuse.

The Batavia High School Girls Track and Field Team won its 12th sectional championship Wednesday, scoring 154 points while second place Wayland-Cohocton had 67 points.

The boys team came in second at 105.5 points, just behind Greece Olympia, with 124.

Individual winners for the Blue Devils were: Katherine Wiseley in the weight throw; Rachel Denise in the pole vault; Maddi Moore in the 1500m race walk; and Sophia Dinehart in the 1500 meter. Other girls who had good performances were Maggie Cecere, Kiaya Franklin, Celia Flynn, Claire Zickl, Sam Cohen, Lizzy Cohen and Brianna Bromley.

"The Batavia girls were able to score in every event and had many solid performances and season-best times," said Coach Nicholas Burk.

For the boys, Anthony Ray continued his run of success this season by winning both the shot put and the weight throw.

Other boys who had good performances were Jaysen Wylie, Anthony Gallo, Campbell Andersen, Cal Jantzi, Louie Leone, Ian SanFratello, Nick Callisher and Mike Hughes.

Batavia boys beat Brockport 79-62 Tuesday in a track meet at Van Detta Stadium. The girls won 84-45.

Two Batavia High School athletes competed in the state indoor track championships this weekend. Devon Koepp (pictured) finished sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 58' 8" (He is the Section V record holder at 60' 5.") and Kaylee Cassidy finished sixth in the 1,600 medley.

Batavia High School track star Alex Egeli stopped in to see his chiropractor, Tom Mazurkiewicz, today before heading off to the state championships in Syracuse.

Egeli is ranked the number one runner in the state in the 400 meter hurdles and 110 meter hurdles. He's the first BHS track team member to qualify in four state events (those two, plus 100-yard dash and he's a member of one of the relay teams).

Mazurkiewicz will be at the state championship as well, working as a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care is being increasingly recognized as important by athletes, Mazurkiewicz said, because joint restriction and muscle imbalance can impede performance and increase the chance of injury. It's become a part of the training routine for NFL and Olympic athletes, he said.

Egeli will attend Freedonia next year and then maybe move up to a Division I university.

Batavia High School girls track team won the Section V Class B championship in a meet in Lyons on Saturday.

With 97.50 points, BHS topped Honeoye Falls-Lima at 82.50 and Wayne Central at 76 in a field with 14 teams competing.

Both the boys and girls track teams from Batavia High School won Class C Section V championships in a meet at RIT last night.

Le Roy boys won the Class D title and the Le Roy girls came in second.

Batavia boys finished with 117.50, edging out Aquinas Institute, 74.50. The girls had 113 points and Wayland-Cohocton came in second with 110.

Le Roy boys beat UPrep Rochester 86-79, while the girls came in behind Marion, 71-60.

Le Roy track and field standout Ruben Owens, front row center, signed a national letter of intent yesterday to attend the University of Arkansas on a full scholarship.

Owens has won Section V titles in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. In all, for both winter and spring seasons, Owens holds 11 Section V titles.

He holds the school records in the high, long and triple jump.

Chiropractor Thomas Mazurkiewicz invited me over to his office this afternoon to meet Nick and Josh Guarino.

The twins are graduates of Byron-Bergen High School and will compete this weekend in the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

They qualified in a meet Saturday -- the last chance to qualify -- by running their personal best times in the 800 meter. Nick won the race with a time of 1:47.13 and Josh was third at 1:47.35.

At the U.S. Championships, there is a field of 37 runners competing for three spots on the U.S. team that will compete in Moscow at the world championships. There are 14 runners who qualified with faster times than Nick. The fastest qualifying time is Duane Solomon at 1:42.82.

"I probably don't have a shot at that (going to Moscow)," Nick said. "But my dream is to make the Olympic team or world championship team."

Mazurkiewicz is doing what he can to help. Mazurkiewicz explained that a slight hip misalignment can cost a world-class runner vital 10ths of a second, which can be the difference between winning a medal or being an also-ran.

Misalignment, he said, can also lead to injury.

There will be dozens of chiropractors tending to runners at the U.S. Championship, Josh said, but they were at Mazurkiewicz's office today for their pre-race treatment.

"Treating athletes is like fine tuning a car," Mazurkiewicz said. "Chiropractic adjustments give athletes a winning edge by giving them proper bio-mechanics, structure, increased range of motion along with proper posture and balance."

Two Batavia-area athletes competing for Fredonia State made strong showings this past week at the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet at SUNY Cortland.

Eric Williams won the 110-meter high hurdle title and Max Radley finished second in the men's hammer throw.

Williams, a freshman, won with a time of 14.70 seconds.

Radley's best toss measured 52.34 meters. Radley is a senior.

Fredonia is a Division III NCAA school.

The Blue Devils are Class B Section V outdoor track champions for the second season in a row, crushing the competition Saturday in Marion with 131 points.

Second place Aquinas had 72 points.

Individual event winners were:

Eric Williams, pole vault with a 12-foot jump, and 400 hurdles with a new school record of 57.5 seconds.

The boys 4x100 relay was won by Brandon Stevenson, Andrew Budlong, Mitch Noble and Alex Egeli with a time of 45.18.

Damion Reeves won shot put with a throw of 45' 7".

Ty Demmer won the 3,200-meter run with time of 10:15.

T.T. Martinez won pentathlon with 2,611 points.

This is the team's 4th outdoor title, and with a title in indoor track this winter, the Blue Devils now have 18 total track championships in the program's history.
