Tennis: Elba aces Alexander in five matches

The Elba Lancers pulled a 5-0 victory against the Alexander Trojans at Genesee Community College on Wednesday.
Jason Rowe beat Kendrick Ochoa 6-1, 6-1 at first singles.
Alexa Ocampo beat Adam Dolph 6-3, 6-2 in the second singles position.
At third singles, Clara Torrey beat Simon Fuller 6-2, 6-3.
Grace Koch and Alex Mendoza scored 6-0, 6-0 against Ella Bodnarskyj and Carli Koch at first doubles.
Lucy Torrey and Amy Garcia rounded out the fifth and final win for the Lancers after a first-set comeback and final score of 6-4, 6-2.

Softball: Elba beats Attica as Brea Smith reaches 109 career K's

Elba's Brea Smith struck out 10 Attica batters on Tuesday to surpass the century mark in strikeouts as the Lancers beat the Blue Devils 8-5.

Baseball: Nick Scott tops 100 career Ks in Elba's win over Attica

Elba's Nick Scott surpassed 100 strikeouts in his high school career, fanning 10 in a 12-1 win on Monday over Attica.

He now has 109 Ks in his career.

He gave up one run and walked one batter.

Offense:

Brendan Porey, 2-3, walk, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 3 stolen bases. Porey is hitting .667 on the year so far.
Nick Scott, 1-3, RBI, 2 runs, 3 stolen bases, one walk.
Alex Rascoe, 2-4, RBI, run, 2 stolen bases.

"I'm very proud of our team," said Coach Andrew Boyce. "We challenged them yesterday at practice to jump out to an early lead, and that's exactly what they did. I couldn't be more proud. 6-0 is great, but the boys need to stay humble and keep stacking days. All 13 players saw at least 2 innings of work today, and all contributed to a great team win."

Softball: O-A beats ND 8-4

Oakfield-Alabama beat Notre Dame in softball on Tuesday, 8-4.

Savannah Durham got the win, going all seven innings, giving up six hits, one walk, two earned runs while striking out 12.

Baseball: Kendall tops O-A, 11-1

Oakfield-Alabama fell on Tuesday to Kendall in baseball 11-1.

The Hornets are now 3-2, and Kendall improves to 11-1.

Kendal held the Hornets to five hits.

Baseball: Roy Hart rallies in ninth to beat O-A 13-7

Both Oakfield-Alabama and Roy Hart pounded out 14 hits each, and both teams made seven errors each, but Roy Hart made the most of its opportunities for a 13-7 win on Monday.

The teams went into the ninth inning tied at 7 and Hart rallied for six runs in the top of the inning. The Hornets couldn't answer the the bottom of the ninth.

Avery Watterson was the starter for O-A, going five innings and giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) while fanning seven.

Jack Cianfrini took the loss, pitching the ninth and giving up five hits and six runs (two earned).

Softball: Notre Dame's 12 hits not enough in 8-5 loss to Pembroke

Pembroke beat Notre Dame in softball on Monday, 8-5, even though the Irish out-hit the Dragons 12 to 8.

Sofia Falleti led the Irish, going 3-4 at the plate, including a double, two singles, and an RBI. Anna Panepinto, Sofia Falleti, Gianna Falleti, Olivia Gillard, and Riley Hare each drove in a run for the Irish. Shirley Thompson and Amelia Sorochty had multiple hits for the Irish.

Batvaia defeated Pittsford-Mendon in softball on Monday, 13-1, with the game being called under the mercy rule at the end of the fifth inning.

The Lady Devils are now 2-5. Mendon is 2-6.

The winning pitcher was Ariana Almekinder, who gave up only three hits while striking out four.

Offense:

Libby Grazioplene, 2-3, 3 RBIs
Drew Stevens, 3-4, 4 RBIs
Hannah Carney, 3-4, 3 RBIs
Gabby Smith, 2-2
Kyleigh Kabel and Lyla Smith both had hits

"The girls really came out hitting today," said Coach Robert Kersch. "Ariana Almekinder was solid on the mound, allowing only three hits. Defense also had a strong outing today, making the putouts when needed. Hannah Carney had her 100th varsity hit Friday at Attica and continued her hot hitting today with a 3-4 three-RBI outing. Stevens and Grazioplene both were strong at the plate today and have been all season. We have a young team that continues to stay positive, have each other’s backs, and continues to grow as a team."

Flag Football: Batavia loses to Churchville 18-6

The Batavia Lady Blue Devils lost to Churchville-Chili 18-6 on Monday evening in Flag Football.
Quarterback Jaimin Macdonald was 17-30 passing for 120 yards, 1 TD, and 3 INTs. Macdonald also led the team in rushing with 20 yards on six carries. Wide receiver Leilah Manuel had four receptions for 55 yards, with a 37-yard touchdown reception from Macdonald. Nicole Doeringer added four receptions for 49 yards.
Defensively, Macdonald led the team with eight flag pulls, 3 for loss from her inside linebacker position. Manuel and Kylee Brennan added seven flag pulls each, with Brennan adding two passes defended.
The Lady Blue Devils fall to 3-3 with four regular-season games remaining. On Friday, May 2, Batavia will host Spencerport for Senior Night at VanDetta Stadium at 6 p.m.

Baseball: Batavia gets fifth-straight win against Sutherland

Batavia beat Pittsford-Sutherland in baseball on Monday, 9-4.

Bronx Bucholz threw a complete game, getting the win, while scattering eight hits and fanning five.

"Bronx was around the zone all day today, challenging hitters and using his defense," said Coach Michael Sputore. "We turned three key double plays to limit (Sutherland) and get out of some big jams.

"Offensively, we got on the board and tacked on a few on some defense mishap. They're a great team, and baseball is a pretty true game; the team that makes the fewest mistakes usually wins. Batavia is now 6-3 overall and 3-0 in league play."

The Blue Devils face Sutherland again on Wednesday at Dwyer Stadium. Game time is 5 p.m.

"Brady had very good command today, only walking one batter," said Coach Michael Sputore. "His ability to challenge hitters and get ahead was key. The defense played a very clean game today behind him. Offensively, we had some big hits, and they made three double plays to get Arcadia out of some jams. Batavia opened it up, putting up five runs in the 6th, sending 11 hitters to the plate, producing five hits that inning. We're really playing really well and on a four-game win streak. Batavia is now 5-3 overall and 2-0 in league play."

Batavia plays Pittsford Sutherland on Monday in a league matchup.

Author who wrote well regarded book about baseball in Batavia stops by Eli Fish for book signing

Will Bardenwerper's book about baseball in Batavia and America has been getting national attention and is currently ranked #17 on Amazon's list of best-selling baseball books.

The book, "Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America," is resonating with readers and reviewers.

That may signal, Bardenwerper said, that people are looking for small-town values of community.

"I think it speaks to the fact that maybe there is a real hunger for these kinds of places where people can come together for an affordable price and have a good time and kind of put some of the division that we find in our society behind us for a few hours and just have fun," Bardenwerper told The Batavian during a book signing at Eli Fish Brewing Co. on Saturday evening.

There have been several book reviews of Homestand published, including in major publications such as the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

The book addresses the growing divide in America between the corporatist world of Major League Baseball and the grassroots game in places like Batavia, which lost its historic minor league team when MLB broke with tradition and consolidated its minor league affiliates. That decision turned out to make baseball in Batavia better with the arrival of Robbie and Nellie Nichols, owners of the revived Batavia Muckdogs of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

If highlighting that dichotomy has ruffled any feathers in the executive suites at the MLB, Bardenwerper hasn't heard about it.

"I don't know to what extent it is or isn't on their radar," Bardenwerper said. "If it is, I'm guessing they just kind of would like it to go away."

If you missed Bardenwerper at Eli Fish, there is another book signing Saturday (today) in Medina at Author's Note Bookstore, as part of Independent Bookstore Day. Bardenwerper will be in store from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Other authors participating are Doogie Horner from 10:30 to noon and Mylisa Larsen from noon to 1:30 p.m. Author's Note is located at 519 Main St., Medina.

Winning for Batavia were Talyn Kennedy at 2nd singles, along with Aiden Reimer and Will Fulton at first doubles.

Softball: Alexander beats Elba, 13-5

Ella Felski drove in five runs on two hits to help lead the Alexander Trojans past Elba 13-5 on Thursday. Felski tripled in the fifth inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the seventh inning, scoring two.
Alexander changed the game in the top of the third, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead 5-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Paige Morton that drove in two.
Morton earned the win on the bump for Alexander. The hurler allowed 10 hits and five runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out two and walking one. Smith took the loss for Elba. The pitcher went seven innings, surrendering 13 runs (eight earned) on 18 hits, striking out five and walking two.
Alexander piled up 18 hits in the game. Lillian Szymkowiak, Melissa Sawyer, and Melanie Bump each collected three hits for Alexander. Morgan Boyce, Emily Pietrzykowski, and Morton each collected multiple hits for the Trojans.
Elba High School amassed 10 hits in the game. Jaco and Ball were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Elba while hitting back-to-back. Marks, Ball, Totten, and Camelo each drove in one run for Elba.
The Trojans welcome Oakfield-Alabama on Friday for their next game at 5 p.m.

"Felski and Morton had 9 RBIs between the two of them, and when girls can deliver with runners in scoring position, that’s huge. Paige Morton pitched great; she tossed a complete game win for her first-ever varsity start. The defense played very well behind her. We know we are in for a challenge against Oakfield tomorrow, and we will show up ready for a true test. We still try to get things going this year."

Softball: Notre Dame beats Byron-Bergen 15-10

Notre Dame beat Byron-Bergen in softball 15-10 at GCC on Thursday.

The winning pitcher was Amelia Sorochty, who struck out eight.

Leading the hitting for the Irish were Anna Panepinto, Sofia Falleti, Gianna Falleti and Mia Treleavan, each going 2-4. S. Falleti, G. Falleti, and Treleaven contributed a double each.

The Irish travel to the Mudville Tournament on Saturday for a doubleheader.
