The old Genesee County Courthouse will be lit up for the next of couple nights in honor of the annual "Shooting for a Cure" pink basketball game this Friday night at Pembroke High School.
Proceeds will go to cancer research for Roswell Park in Buffalo.
All-time scoring leaders, school records, championships, a legacy of excellence, determination, and hard work -- the Johnson family has made a lasting impression of Pembroke girls basketball.
That's the impression you get when you look at the legend of Top 10 scorers in girls basketball on the Pembroke gym, which contains three Johnson names: Breanna, with 814 points, Mackenna, 678 points, and Aralyse, 618 points.
Then there are the two championship basketballs in the trophy case, both with the name "Johnson" on them.
Finally, there is the current roster with senior Sydney on the team that is coached by father Jamie, along with Breanna and Aralyse.
Breanna is no longer the school's all-time scoring leader (Serene Calderon surpassed her last season when she finished her career with 831 points), and Aralyse is still the school's all-time rebound leader with 639, and Mackenna leads all-time in assists with 308 points.
At one time, Breanna, the oldest of the sisters, held all but one of the key girls basketball records and she also helped lead the team to its first Section V title challenge. Her mom Shannon said that was one of her proudest moments in the family's sports history.
"She did anything that (then-coach) Mike Wilson asked her to do," Shannon said. "Just watching her do that -- and I think easily she could have broken 1,000 (points) -- but every game she wanted to make sure every person scored. She could have been somebody who could have walked around with her head high and just bragging but the day that Serene broke her record, (she was) here and taking pictures with (Serene), I think for me, just watching her walk around as somebody who could have just been a snot and she was just so humble, I think for me, that was a proud moment."
All the girls, mom said, have that kind of character, and that means more to her than the athletic accomplishments.
Breanna may have led the way for the girls to make their marks in basketball -- a legacy that eventually helped Pembroke win back-to-back Section V titles in 2019 and 2020 when Mackenna was a junior and a senior -- but the athletic pace of the family was set by father Jamie, a 1991 graduate who excelled as a Dragon in football, baseball, and basketball.
He started coaching youth baseball in high school and as his girls came of age for sports, he naturally fell into coaching them in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball and other travel leagues.
For the past few seasons, he's been the Dragons football coach, and last year he took over the girls varsity program in basketball.
Both Breanna and Aralyse said they love coaching and that dad set the example.
"When I finished college, I came home and I started coaching with an offseason AAU team and I just loved helping the girls learn to play," Breanna said. "I started out with a sixth-grade team. They were younger and still learning so I've stayed with them. I love teaching and helping the girls learn to play the game."
Aralyse said her father definitely inspired her as a player and coach.
"So many people hate being coached by their parents," Aralyse said. "I had my dad for one year when I played travel basketball and I couldn't imagine a better coach at that point. I think his consistency, and just seeing his determination and his hard work and everything he does is really inspiring.
"He's always been constant in support whether we have a bad game or a good game, he's always there to either congratulate us or tell us what we could have done better or different."
Breanna is 25 and majored in biology at Clarkson University. Aralyse is 24 and is an event coordinator after attending Johnson & Wales University.
It's watching young athletes grow that drew Jamie to coaching, he said.
"I like the connections you make with the kids and the improvement that you get to see," Jamie said. "They come in sometimes with raw skills and you get to watch them develop, and watch them gain confidence in the skills and the new skills that they're learning."
Basketball has always been part of the Johnson household, the girls said, especially after Breanna took up the sport as a young girl. She led the way, her younger sisters said, and Jamie was an immediate inspiration with his deep knowledge of the game.
"It definitely gave me something to look up to with both my older sisters playing before me and my dad (coaching)," said Mackenna, who has continued her basketball career at GCC, where she's in a natural sciences program in environmental biology with hopes of becoming a park ranger or DEC officer. "They all really helped me set goals and helped me work towards those goals, and it brings us a lot closer together. It's our whole life."
Sydney, of course, had three older sisters to guide her toward the game.
"Since the time I was three years old, I'd be going to basketball games and going to my sister's tournaments or even just the high school games. I was always here," Sydney said. "I started just going to my sisters' open gyms or practices and just shooting on the side while they were actually practicing. Ever since then I fell in love (with the game)."
In the Johnson household, Shannon said, post-game film review among the girls and their father has been a regular undertaking.
"I guess (it means a lot to me) just watching them take after their father, seeing the things that he loved, and we've all let them try," Shannon said. "They have tried everything from gymnastics to competitive dance to softball, everything. They take after their dad, like coming home after a game and wanting to watch the game again and go through it with Dad what we did wrong, what we did well. Watching them strive to be like him and be dedicated like him; I think that's one thing that means a lot to me."
As a dad and coach, Jamie gives his girls most of the credit for what they've accomplished on and off the court.
"They have, I don't know what to call it, an inner drive that, you know, they want to be the best of everything," Jamie said. "So they put in the work, they put in the time, and they really just have that inner drive, I don't know how else to explain it."
Jamie said he is the proud coach and father. His girls have set records, won titles, set a good example for their friends and classmates, and set themselves on solid career paths. But he's most proud, he said, that his girls have good character.
"I'm proud of how the girls carry themselves in all the things that they do, whether it be at work or at school or in sports," he said.

Freshman Olivia Breeden scored a career-high 21 points to help lead the Pembroke Dragons over Albion, 59-38, in girls basketball on Monday.
Breeden also had two steals.
Karli Houseknecht scored 11 points and had five steals, while Sydney Johnson scored nine points, had four assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Izzy Breeden scored seven points and had four rebounds.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred at 3:05 a.m., Saturday, on Route 77 in the Town of Pembroke.
Jordan E. Terkel, 32, of Corfu, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Terkel's vehicle was reportedly southbound on Route 77 when it traveled off the south shoulder of the roadway and hit a utility pole.
Coroner Karen Lang pronounced Terkel dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The Sheriff's Crash Management Team is investigating the accident.
Pembroke Fire and Indian Falls Fire assisted at the scene.

The Pembroke Jr./Sr. High School Girls’ Basketball Team will host its 11th annual Shooting For A Cure! event versus Oakfield-Alabama on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 7:00 PM at the high school gym located at the corner of Routes 5 and 77 (8717Alleghany Road) in Pembroke, New York. Admission is free. The team asks that attendees make a donation of any amount as they enter the facility, and all donations go to Roswell Park to support research efforts. In addition to donations at the door, all proceeds from raffle tickets, concession sales, and apparel sales go directly to Roswell Park. To date, Shooting For A Cure! has raised over $200,000 and has become Roswell Park’s largest independent, community-based fundraising event.
The event began over a decade ago when the team approached then head coach Mike Wilson with an idea; they wanted to show their support for Toni Funke, wife of former coach and Pembroke teacher Ron Funke, in her battle against breast cancer by hosting a game in her honor which would bring the community together to raise awareness and funds for cancer research at Roswell Park. This season, the team hopes to add to the $200,000 the event has generated and donated since 2011, by continuing this benevolent Pembroke tradition.

Rebecca Lynn Martin, 27, of Brick Schoolhouse Road, Hamlin, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, reckless in the endangerment, leaving the scene of an injury accident, and reckless driving. Martin is accused of being a driver involved in a motor vehicle accident at 7:02 p.m., Jan. 14, on Lake Street Road, Le Roy, and leaving the scene of the accident. Martin allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign causing her vehicle to strike another vehicle. Martin's vehicle was located in the Le Roy Park and Ride and while deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, her vehicle allegedly struck a Village of Le Roy patrol car. Martin was processed at the Genesee County Jail and released on appearance tickets.
Rebecca L. Harrington, 28, of Attica, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or greater, driving left of pavement markings, speeding, and failure to stop at stop sign. Harrington was stopped at 10:07 p.m., Jan. 6, by a Batavia police officer. She was issued tickets and released.
James R. Cooper, 39, of Batavia, is charged with unreasonable noise, a violation of the Batavia Municipal Code. Cooper is accused of playing rock music at a loud volume for an extended period of time at a location on Buell Street on Jan. 11. He was issued an appearance ticket.
Jolene Y. Stevens, 33, of Batavia, is charged with harassment 2nd. Stevens is accused of using a piece of wood to hit another person in the back during an incident reported at 8 a.m., Jan. 22, on East Main Street, Batavia. Stevens was arraigned in City Court and released.
Lyndsay T. Young, 38, of Batavia, is charged with criminal contempt 2nd. Young is accused of violating an order of protection at 3:57 p.m., Dec. 30. She was issued an appearance ticket.
Sean D. Roczen, 38, of Rochester, is charged with aggravated harassment 2nd. Roczen turned himself on an arrest warrant in relation to an incident reported at 9:26 p.m., Jan. 7, on Kingsbury Avenue. He was arraigned in City Court and released on his own recognizance.
Jeffrey P. Schneider, 51, of Batavia, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, and moving from lane unsafely. Schneider was arrested following a three-vehicle property-damage accident at 7:09 p.m., Dec. 27, on East Main Street, Batavia. Schneider was processed Batavia PD headquarters and released on tickets.
Montell L. Cunningham, 28, of Lockport, is charged with criminal contempt. Cunningham is accused of violating an order of protection at 11:55 p.m., Jan. 9, in the parking lot on Alva Place. He was issued an appearance ticket.
Daniel Thomas Henning, 41, of Maple Street, Batavia, is charged with falsifying business records 1st. Henning is accused of falsifying business records at Pawn King, on Veterans Memorial Drive, at 12:11, Dec. 22. The case was investigated by Investigator Erik Andre and Deputy James Stack. Henning was issued an appearance ticket.
Nicholas Scott Warriner, 24, DWI, refusal to take a breath test, speed not reasonable and prudent, and following too close. Warriner is accused of driving too fast for conditions and too close to a marketed Sheriff's patrol vehicle at 12:15 a.m., Jan. 16, on Clinton Street Road, Bergen. When the deputy slowed his vehicle while a lead vehicle was turning, Warriner's vehicle allegedly hit the rear of the patrol vehicle. Warriner allegedly failed a field sobriety test. He was issued an appearance ticket. The investigating officer was Deputy Jacob Gauthier.
Brianna Nicole Greene, 34, of Parkridge Avenue, Buffalo, is charged with grand larceny 4th. Greene is accused of stealing more than $1,000 in clothing from Dick's Sporting Goods at 1:51 p.m., Jan. 8. Greene was issued an appearance ticket.
Qumane James Santiago, 23, of West Main Street, Batavia, is charged with harassment 2nd. Santiago is accused of striking another inmate at the Genesee County Jail at 7:21 a.m., Jan. 7.
Rachel A. Keene, 26, of Pembroke, is charged with DWI. Keene was stopped by a trooper out of SP Clarence on south Newstead Road, Newstead, on Jan. 8. She was allegedly driving with a BAC of .10. She was released on an appearance ticket.
Notre Dame will get a chance to play for another Rotary Club crown at 7:30 p.m. tonight at GCC after beating an aggressive Pembroke Lady Dragons team on Tuesday for a 49-34 victory.
The Lady Irish were led by Emma Sisson with 13 points, Mayee Green, 12, and Lindsey Weidman, 10.

In a decision rendered December 21, 2021, Genesee County Court Judge Charles N. Zambito affirmed the misdemeanor DWI conviction of defendant James D. Doyle (complete decision attached). The defendant was convicted upon his guilty plea in Pembroke Town Court in March of 2018 and was sentenced to a conditional discharge.
On August 26-27, 2012, around midnight, Trooper Timothy Pickering was on duty and received multiple reports through dispatch of an erratic vehicle traveling eastbound on the Thruway. Trooper Pickering located the car in the Pembroke service area. The vehicle was parked but it was still running. When the trooper approached the car, he saw "a driver sitting in the driver's seat, no seat belt, slumped over the wheel, and there was a female passenger in the passenger seat slumped over, too." The trooper knocked on the window and received no response. He then opened the door and was eventually successful in waking up the driver, who was Mr. Doyle.
After Mr. Doyle pleaded guilty, he filed a notice of appeal In April of 2018. In July of 2020, after Mr. Doyle had made no further action to perfect the appeal, the Genesee County District Attorney's Office moved to dismiss the matter. Genesee County Court allowed Mr. Doyle to complete his appeal, and an oral argument occurred on September 29, 2021.
In its decision, Genesee County Court found that Trooper Pickering was justified In "the minimally intrusive act of opening the defendant's . . . door to continue his Investigation" due to "the recent and substantial report of the defendant's erratic driving behavior, the manner in which the defendant's vehicle was parked, the fact that the vehicle was still running, and the defendant's unresponsive state." These factors gave the trooper reasonable cause to believe that the defendant had operated the vehicle while intoxicated or impaired. The trooper's actions were also justified under the emergency doctrine.
Assistant District Attorney Robert J. Shoemaker, who handled the appeal, welcomed the decision. "This is a good result not only for law enforcement, but it is also a win for logic and reason. We appreciate County Court's recognition that a trooper in this situation can approach a car and check on the occupants, both to determine their welfare and to investigate possible criminal activity.
Indeed, Trooper Pickering would have been derelict in his duties if he had knocked on Mr. Doyle's window and, upon receiving no response, had simply walked away.”

A power outage affecting 740 National Grid customers is reported along South Pearl Street Road and south nearly to Alexander Road, from the City of Batavia to near Darien.
The power outage was reported at 1:41 p.m.
It is unconfirmed if related, but there was a motor vehicle accident reported at 2901 South Pearl Street Road, Pembroke, at about the same time the outage started.
The estimated power restoration is 3:45 p.m.
UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: Power has been restored.

The students, teachers, and staff at Pembroke Intermediate School participated in their annual December Drive which benefits the Corfu Food Pantry. This year, almost 1,400 items were collected! Student Council members, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students delivered the food on Friday, December 17.
“This is one of the Intermediate School’s favorite holiday traditions. The entire school and community comes together to help those in need,” said student council and 6th grade teacher Arron Brown.
A one-vehicle accident is reported in the area of 7989 Slusser Road, East Pembroke.
The car is in a field. The driver reportedly sustained only minor injuries but extrication is required.
East Pembroke Fire on scene and Alabama Fire called to assist.
UPDATE 2:59 p.m.: Crews have managed to get the patient out through the door. Alabama can stand down and the East Pembroke engine can continue non-emergency.
The Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club was recognized today by the Hiram G. Luhman Post 626 of the American Legion for their efforts to support Wreaths Across America.
The club raised $2,300 for the organization by selling 470 wreaths in support of service at the WNY National Cemetery in Pembroke on Saturday.
At the event, family members of servicemen and women, among others, will be laying wreaths on the graves of veterans and spouses. The event is open to the public and begins at noon (recommended arrival time, 11:30 a.m.) Speakers include David Bellavia, Medal of Honor recipient, Rep. Chris Jacobs, and Assemblyman Stephen Hawley.

John Kenneth Hobbs, 34, of Clinton Street Road, Batavia, is charged with burglary 2nd and violation of an order of protection. Hobbs is accused of entering the home of a protected party at 1:10 p.m., Nov. 24. He then allegedly fled the property and was located in the nearby woods by Deputy James Stack and K-9 "Rayzor." He was also accused of burglary 2nd and disobeying a mandate for a similar incident at 11:30 p.m., Nov. 4.
Alexander Douglas Scheg, 27, of Warboys Road, Byron, is charged with bail jumping 3rd. During an unrelated incident, Scheg was identified who allegedly failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance. He was issued an appearance ticket.
Gerard Hart Altenburg, 26, of Main Road, Pembroke, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or greater, speeding, unsafe passing, and reckless driving. Altenburg was stopped at 7:02 p.m., Dec. 1, on Main Road in Pembroke by Deputy Kyle Krzemien.
Specialist Four Clarence "C. Jay" Hall, a graduate of Pembroke HS, was mortally wounded in Vietnam on Oct. 7, 1969, while allowing his comrades to achieve cover while under heavy fire.
As a result, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
He was honored in another way on Tuesday when Assemblyman Stephen Hawley and State Senator Ed Rath unveiled a marker commemorating a portion of Route 77 through Pembroke as SP4 C. Jay Hall Memorial Highway.
“The story of ‘C. Jay’ Hall’s sacrifice and bravery in the face of danger encapsulates the selfless spirit of our service members and is one that should be remembered for generations,” said Hawley. “Seeing the sign honoring his sacrifice unveiled today was a proud moment after working for so long to make it a reality, so I want to thank all of the local and state legislative partners I’ve worked with in the last year who helped make it happen for their dedication to getting this bill passed, as well as our local veteran organizations, who were of tremendous assistance in advocating for its creation.”
Rath also praised Hall's service and sacrifice in Vietnam.
"Ronald Reagan said, 'we're forever indebted to those who gave their lives so that we can be free,'" Rath said. "Our debt to C. Jay Hall can never be prepared but our gratitude and respect must last forever and endure the test of time. Naming and dedicating this roadway will remind all who pas here as free citizens, the sacrifice that Specialist 4 Clarence Jay Hall paid to guarantee our freedom."
Matthew Moscato, advisor to the Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club, with student Megan Stiles, who came up with the idea of honoring Hall and brought the idea to the Club and did much of the research that brought the project forward to the Legislature and other local leaders.
Eric A. Spikes, 44, no permanent address, is charged with assault 2nd, two counts of burglary 2nd, menacing 3rd, and endangering the welfare of a child. Spikes is accused of physically attacking and injuring another person during an incident on Aug. 26 at 12:17 a.m. on North Lyon Street, Batavia, where multiple children were present. He was arrested on a warrant. He was arraigned in City Court and jailed without bail.
Katherine Jessica Vail, 29, of Griswold Road, Bergen, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, and reckless endangerment 2nd. Vail is accused of driving drunk and striking a pedestrian and his dog at 6:11 p.m., Saturday, on South Lake Road, Bergen. VAil was released on an appearance ticket.
Jeffery Michael Johnson, 33, of Lake Street, Le Roy, is charged with DWI Drugs and driving left of the pavement markings. Johnson was stopped at 3:46 a.m., Saturday, on Main Road, Stafford, by Deputy David Moore. He was released on an appearance ticket.
Jonathan Micahel Reed, 28, of Lake Street Road, Le Roy, is charged with two counts of sex offender failure to report a change of address/status within 10 days. Reed is accused of failure to register a new internet service provider and account within 10 days. He was arraigned in Town of Le Roy Court and jailed without bail.
Aaron Michael Reagan Hatt, 25, of Federal Drive, Batavia, is charged with driving while impaired by drugs, DWI, driving without a license, and failure to signal. Hatt was stopped at 2:13 a.m, Sept. 19, on Wortendyke Road, Batavia, by Deputy Morgan Ewert. Hatt was released on an appearance ticket.
Zachary James Chittenden, 34, of Boyce Road, Pembroke, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 or greater, and no or inadequate plate lamps. Chittenden was stopped at 2:38 a.m., Sunday, on Hartshorn Road, Batavia, by Deputy Zachary Hoy.
Philip M. Escobar, 32, of Kirvin, Texas, was arrested on a bench warrant for alleged failure to appear in Batavia City Court. He was arraigned in City Court and released on his own recognizance.
Mark B. Havens, 59, of Batavia, is charged with criminal mischief 3rd, assault 3rd, and grand larceny 4th. Havens is accused of striking another person in the face causing injury and taking the person's mobile phone, and damaging a computer during an incident reported at 3:40 p.m., Nov. 7, at an address on Liberty Street, Batavia. Havens was arraigned in City Court and released on his own recognizance.
Jason L. Johnson, 39, of Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th. Johnson was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with another person at a business on East Main Street at 11:58 p.m., Nov. 5, and when police identified Johnson, they arrested him on charges from an unrelated incident. He was allegedly found in possession of crack cocaine and a broken crack pipe in his jean pocket.
Jaequele M. Tomlin, 26, of Batavia, is charged with criminal mischief 3rd. Tomlin is accused of damaging property on Watson Street during an incident reported at 10:24 a.m., Nov. 4. She was arraigned in City Court and released on her own recognizance.
Paul A. Inostroza, 30, of Batavia, is accused of criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, reckless endangerment 2nd, attempted assault 2nd, and harassment 2nd. Inostroza allegedly attacked another person at 12:50 a.m., Sept. 5, at a location on East Main Street, Batavia. He was arraigned in City Court and released under supervision.
Erik Pokornowski, 30, of Byron, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08, failure to stop at a stop sign, and moving from lane unsafely. Pokornowski was stopped at 1 a.m., Oct. 30 on East Main Street, Batavia, by a Batavia police officer. He was released on an appearance ticket.
Gilberto N. Natal, 33, of Batavia, is charged with harassment 2nd. Natal allegedly grabbed another person during an argument and threw the person to the ground in an incident reported at 3:45 p.m., Oct. 27, on South Lyon Street, Batavia. Natal was arraigned in City Court and released on his own recognizance.
Timothy M. Henry, 26, of Le Roy, is charged with petit larceny. Henry is accused of stealing $74.54 in merchandise from the Walmart in Warsaw. He was arrested by State Police and released on an appearance ticket.
Michael P. Jansma, 32, of Attica, is charged with DWI and driving with a BAC of .08 or greater. Jansma was stopped by State Police at 9:45 p.m., Saturday, in the Town of Pembroke. He was released on an appearance ticket.
Crystal S. Duncan, 36, of Batavia, is charged with DWI and driving with a BAC of .08 or greater. Duncan was stopped by State Police at 10:26 p.m., Friday, in the Town of Batavia. Duncan was released on an appearance ticket.
Allyson P. Lawrence, 27, of Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th. Lawrence was arrested by State Police in the Town of Batavia, at 4:48 p.m., Nov. 7. She was released on an appearance ticket. No further details released.
Valarie L. Mancini, 64, of Shortsville, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th and driving while impaired by drugs. Mancini was stopped at 6:15 a.m., Nov. 10, by State Police, in the City of Batavia.
A 15-year-old resident of Batavia is charged with criminal mischief 3rd. The youth was arrested by State Police in connection with an incident reported at 10:50 p.m., July 24.

For the purpose of electing two(2) Fire District Commissioners.

- one for a one(1) year term commencing on January 1, 2022

Pembroke and Indian Falls Fire responded to a car fire on Main Road, Pembroke, in front of Pembroke Fire Hall at 10:23 a.m.
The fire was extinguished quickly. Corfu Fire was also dispatched and later canceled.
