Once Batavia was able to slow down Merritt Holly, Jr. in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils were able to pull away from the Oatkan Knights in the large school championship game of Lions Club Pete Arras Memorial Tournament at GCC on Thursday night.

Holly led the tournament in scoring after posting 28 points against Batavia, though he was held to just two field goals in the final quarter.

Le Roy's next highest point total came from Jean Agosto, with eight.

Carter McFollins scored 20 points for Batavia, and Rasheed Christie scored 12.

"I think our ball pressure in the second half was a key factor in that game," said Batavia Head Coach Buddy Brasky. "Merritt Holly is tough to stop and we really emphasized sandwiching him with two defenders and putting ball pressure on the guards, and I think that's what really kind of turned the game in the second half."

Brasky said he's proud of the effort of his team.

"They're playing hard, but we've got a long way to go," Brasky said.

McFollins was named the tournament MVP.

Also on the all-tournament team for the large school division were Jamel Johnson, Jr., of Roy Hart, Agosto, Holly, Batavia's Ja'vin McFollins, and Christie.

Press release:

We are excited to have your school in the newly expanded Batavia Lions Club Tournament that now includes both a large and small school division. This year’s tournament is a 2-day affair with games on Tuesday, Dec. 28 and Thursday, Dec. 30. The only cost involved is two vouchers for the JV Tournament and one voucher for the Varsity to help cover the cost of having three officials on the Varsity games. This year Alexander replaces Perry and we are rotating the first-round matchups. More info will follow as we get closer to the basketball season.

The Batavia Lions Club is excited to have your team play in one of the best and longest-running Boys Basketball tournaments in Section V.  The additional teams with their strong community support made this event even better than had been in the previously the past 2 years. There were great crowds which provided  an exciting atmosphere for the student-athletes. Hoping for more of the same in December 2021!

There will be no rematch of last year's final between Cal-Mum and Notre Dame for the Rotary Championship after both teams fell in first-round games on Wednesday at Genesee Community College.

Notre Dame fell to Wellsville in the first game and Batavia notched a convincing 55-28 win over Cal-Mum, who lost to Notre Dame last year, but won the championship in 2017.

Bryn Wormley scored 15 points and Ryann Stefaniak scored 14 to lead the Blue Devils. Kenz Reigle added 10 and Emma Krolczyk and Jenae Colkey added six each.

For Cal-Mum, Elyse Van Auken scored 12 points.

Batavia Coach Marty Hein said he's been working with his team on their defense, which needs to improve for the team to advance and will be key if the team is to win Friday against Wellsville.

"They (Wellsville) have some outside shooters," Hein said. "They have people from the outside and they can also drive and penetrate. Our defense has to be, somebody has to play shutdown on the ball and we've got to steer it one direction and the other. People have to be willing to jump off and shut down driving lanes down as well as knowing who's the shooter and get out there them to close out them."

Game time Friday is 7:30 p.m. in the Anthony Zambito Gym at GCC.
