Brynn Walczak notched another double-double and Leah Bezon scored her 1,000th career point Saturday afternoon as the Lady Lancers beat archrival Notre Dame 52-38.

Walczak scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Bezon's 1,000th point came on a free throw in the third quarter. She scored nine points.

Taylor Augello scored 12 points. Maddie Muehlig scored five and grabbed eight rebounds.

For the Lady Irish, Emma Sisson, Maylee Green, and Amelia McCulley each scored eight points and Lindsey Weidman scored seven. McCulley had 14 rebounds.

The Elba Lancer community celebrated their hometown senior Leah Bezon hitting the 1,000 point mark yesterday at Elba High School with a win over visiting Notre Dame 52-38. 

All three other Genesee regional girls games had victories yesterday.

Batavia beat Olympia 66-46. Byron-Bergen beat Lyndonville 49-42. Pembroke over Attica 48-38.

The Batavia boys’ Blue Devils squad dominated all four quarters with a win over Greece Olympia in Rochester yesterday afternoon. Batavia jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, led by Zach Gilebarto and Stone Silverling.

Olympia chipped away at Batavia’s lead, but Blue Devils were up by nine at the half, 33-24. Batavia shined in the third quarter controlling and scoring 13 points midway to a 46-31 lead, ending the quarter with a 51-40 score.

Foul trouble for Olympia in the fourth quarter and a tight defense rallied Batavia to their fifth straight win to remain undefeated with a score 69-56.

Batavia’s top point scorers -- Zach Gilebarto 22, Stone Silverling 18, Luke Rogers 15, and Alex Hale with nine.

Batavia plays at home today versus local rival Notre Dame, tip off at 3:15 p.m.

Bryn Wormley scored 14 of her game-high 35 points in the third quarter this afternoon, sparking the Batavia High Lady Devils to a 66-46 win over visiting Greece Olympia in Monroe County League girls basketball.

The victory was Batavia's second straight this week over Olympia -- both by 20-point margins -- but this one played out much differently as the teams were tied 21-21 at the half. In Wednesday's 55-35 win, Batavia led by 17 at intermission.

Wormley was the difference today as she sank five three-point shots, including three in the decisive third period when Batavia outscored Olympia 26-14 to take a 47-35 lead.

The senior guard drained two three-pointers and added three free throws to give Batavia a 30-23 edge midway through the third quarter. Another trey at the two-minute mark made it 43-31 and Batavia pulled away from there to even its record at 3-3. Olympia falls to 1-3.

Wormley dished out six assists and came up with seven steals while senior Tess Barone tallied 11 points. Senior guard Mackenzie Reigle had seven points, seven assists, seven rebounds and seven steals; and Rachel Wright chipped in with five rebounds.

Batavia went to the foul line 29 times, making 19.

For Olympia, 5-foot-10 senior forward Taylor Jung nearly matched Wormley's effort, scoring 32 points -- including five three-pointers. No other Lady Spartans hit double figures.

The Lady Devils host Greece Odyssey at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Kaden Cusmano, Gaige Armbrewster, and Travis Wiedrich led Oakfield-Alabama to a 55-43 victory over Wheatland-Chili at home on Friday night.

They scored 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively.  

In the only other local boys basketball game on Friday, Elba beat Notre Dame 61-50.

In girls basketball, Dansville beat Le Roy 65-34, and Pavilion beat York 54-46.

Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball (BGFS) is excited to be entering its fifth year of existence and can’t wait to see all of the smiling young ladies out on the softball field this upcoming spring and summer.

While registration is open until March 13^th, teams may fill up before then, so don’t wait until the deadline! Cost is $80.

New this year, BGFS is pleased to announce the addition of a new 8U team for some of our youngest Stingers to be able to take advantage of. Teams are also available for 10U, 12U and 16U divisions.

Stingers softball is for girls of all skill levels who want to learn and get better at the great game of Fastpitch Softball. Our organization is comprised of parents, coaches and community leaders that want to provide a fun, safe and healthy outlet for young ladies in our area.

We welcome beginners that want to try fastpitch softball, school ball players that want to keep their skills sharp and travel players that just want to get more swings in.

Two members of the Ice Devils, the hockey team that represents Batavia, Le Roy, Alexander, Elba, and Oakfield-Alabama, tested positive for COVID-19, meaning all players and coaches must quarantine at home until Feb. 24.

Three regular-season games have been canceled and won't be rescheduled.

Batavia Athletic Director Michael Bromley said one person tested positive last week and after consulting with the health department and the school's medical director, they would quarantine the team if a second person tested positive. That positive test came in on Tuesday.

This is only the second time a Batavia-affiliated team has been required to quarantine during the regular season. It happened previously with the Alpine Ski team.

Bromley said he can't emphasize enough how important it is for a parent to keep a child home from practice and games if a player is showing any symptoms because it can affect the whole team.

The Ice Devils were 0-4 on the season. The three missed games will be counted as "no contest." There will be five games left in the regular season once the team returns to the ice. Bromley said it will take multiple wins in those final five games for the team to reach the playoffs.

Le Roy sustained another close loss Thursday night, dropping a hoops match to Hornell 57-52.

Cody Lytle scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds. Andrew Loftus, 12 points and 10 rebounds, Mitch Hockey 11 points, and Zach Vanderhoof scored 10 and had six rebounds.

The 1-2 Knights play the next five games on the road.

Also in boys basketball, Pavilion beat Mount Morris 47-38.

Elba's Lady Lancers continued their GR League dominance Thursday night beating Oakfield-Alabama 55-30.

Brynn Walczak scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Elba. Taylor Augello scored 15. Leah Bezon scored seven. Dakota Brinkman had eight rebounds.

For the Lady Hornets, Makena Redding scored 17 points and Kelsy Schlgenaugh had four points and snagged 10 rebounds.

Batavia High School made it two straight wins over Greece school district teams this week, defeating host Greece Olympia, 55-35, tonight in Monroe County League girls' basketball.

Senior guards Mackenzie Reigle and Bryn Wormley scored 22 and 15 points, respectively, for the Lady Devils, who on Monday topped Greece Odyssey by a 69-34 score.

Reigle registered a triple-double (points, rebounds and assists) in Monday's game and made her presence felt in all areas again tonight by dishing out six assists, grabbing seven rebounds and recording 12 steals.

Wormley scored eight points in the first quarter as Batavia, 2-3, raced out to a 15-4 lead, and Reigle tallied eight in the second quarter to help the Lady Devils take a 31-14 advantage into the locker room.

The lead ballooned to 45-20 after three periods before Olympia outscored the visitors, 15-10, in the final quarter. Taylor Jung led Olympia, 1-2, with 18 points.

Kennedy Kolb chipped in with six points and Tess Barone had four for Batavia, which is scheduled to host Olympia at 3:15 p.m. this Saturday.

Byron-Bergen High School seniors Bianca Brumsted (top photo, second from left) and Eden Goff (bottom photo, second from left) are taking their commitment to soccer to the next level by signing letters of intent to play the collegiate game.

Brumsted will attend Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she plans to study Criminology and Forensic Psychology. Goff will attend Monroe Community College in Rochester, where she plans to study Criminal Justice.

“On the field, Bianca is known for her high soccer IQ and her fantastic skill level," said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. "However, what stands out the most to me is her ability to lead her teammates.

"As for Eden, if there is one word to describe her on the field, it's tenacious. She can always be counted on to perform at her best and she brings out the best in her teammates as well. I wish them both the very best.”

Brumsted has played premier soccer in Rochester for Empire United for six years. She also played two years of Junior Varsity and two years of Varsity soccer at Byron-Bergen. While playing for Byron-Bergen, she was captain her senior year, was a two-time Genesee League All-Star, and was named to the GLOW Super-12 first team.

Brumsted chose Chatham University because it is a small university in a large city with a degree path in Criminology and Psychology. She also formed a positive connection with their Women’s Soccer Coach Betsy Warren, whom Brumsted sees as a positive role model.

“My favorite memory is making it to the Section V finals this past season,” Brumsted said. “As a team, we were young and inexperienced but we went all the way to the finals. As a captain I did my best to help be a leader, coach on the field, and be a positive role model for the younger players on our roster. I'm soproud of our team.”

Goff played four years of Varsity Soccer with Byron-Bergen, where she is a scholar-athlete and was named a Genesee League All-Star her senior year. Goff chose Monroe Community College because of the good Criminal Justice program and out of her desire to remain closer to home. She is also excited to benefit from joining a great soccer team.

“I would like to thank Coach Hill for coaching me the last four years and for helping me improve as a player,” Goff said. “I would also like to thank my team for making my senior season one I will never forget.”

The Knights dropped to 1-1 on the season losing at home Tuesday night to Livonia 58-48.

Mitch Hockey scored 10 points for Le Roy. Cody Lytle scored nine and had seven rebounds. Merritt Holly scored eight points.

Even with four grapplers winning their matches, Le Roy's wrestling team couldn't hold on for a win in its first meet of the season on Tueday night at Cal-Mum, losing 36-16.

An emotional Senior Night at Batavia High School started off for Head Coach Buddy Brasky introducing his senior players by player appreciating them for the hard work and dedication.

This despite a season that was going to be empty -- with no stats, records and history for the basketball squad in the nearly 40 years of his coaching career due to the coronavirus pandemic. These boys were excited to play when they found out that the season was a go.

The Devils opened up with a six-point early lead in the first quarter. The Greece Olympia High School Spartans came within two, 11-9 after one quarter.

A seesaw second quarter exchanged buckets by both teams to a 17-17 tie with two minutes left in the half. A big three-point bucket by senior Zack Gilebarto ignited the Devils to a 10-point run to make it 27-17 with 20 seconds left. At the half, Batavia led by seven, 29-22.

In the third quarter, Batavia expanded its lead to 41-25. GO was held to only 6 points in the quarter.

Midway through the fourth GO showed some signs of life with 10 points by Nate Miller and eight points by Darrell Williams, but Batavia held on to win. Gilebarto scored 22 and Stone Siverling 19, while Alex Hale tallied 12 points for Batavia.

Batavia will play Greece Olympia on the road this Saturday at 2:15 p.m.

Batavian Jason Quilliam, who has rolled 300 games in league play on consecutive Mondays this month, placed second in the Super Bowl Singles Handicap Tournament at Mancuso Bowling Center.

Quilliam averaged 244 for his first six tournament games before slipping to a 179 game against Buffalo resident Andy Kaczorowski in the title match.

Kaczorowski fired a 270 game (255 scratch) against Quilliam to capture the $400 first prize.

He came in with a 200 average, receiving 15 pins, while Quilliam, who won $300, entered with a 215 average.

Handicap was based on 100 percent of the difference in the bowler’s average and 215. Bowlers with averages of 215 and higher received no handicap.

 “I was gassed once we got to the finals, lost focus and had my worst game of the tournament,” said Quilliam, whose perfect games came in the Mancuso Real Estate Doubles League on Feb. 1 and Feb. 8.

Kaczorowski advanced to the title match with a 219-185 win over high qualifier Rich Wagner of Batavia (of 899 series fame), while Quilliam advanced by defeating Marty Lindner of Scottsville, 222-182.

Wagner and Lindner won $150 apiece.

Quarterfinal results had Kaczorowski beating Heather Roy of Rochester, 261-184; Quilliam topping Tom Baker of Pavilion, 259-178; Linder ousting Brady Weber of Perry, 198-192, and Wagner stopping Geoff Harloff of Batavia, 268-226.

Roy, Baker, Weber and Harloff won $100 each.

Wagner led the four-game qualifying round with a 989 score, while Quilliam was next with 984. Harloff secured the eighth and final spot with 928.

The tournament drew 42 entries.

The Byron-Bergen/Le Roy girls swim team won the Genesee Regional Championship over the weekend, placing first out of seven teams at the meet.  

The team scored 492 points. Notre Dame/Batavia finished second with 419 points.

Swim Coach Sara Stockwell said it has been 10 years since Byron-Bergen won the league championship meet.

Senior Alaura Rehwaldt won the 100-meter butterfly and broke her own school record with a time of 1:03.59.

Alaura Rehwaldt, Jorie Strzelecki, Peyton Koukides and Natalee Shepard won the 200-meter freestyle relay and also broke their own school record with a time of 1:46.36.

While Rich Wagner's mind-boggling 899 series dominated the bowling scene last week -- and will be talked about for years to come, a few other other Genesee Region USBC league bowlers rolled noteworthy games and series.

Wagner, a 38-year-old left-hander from Batavia, recorded 300-300-299--899 on Thursday night in the Toyota of Batavia 5-Man League at Mancuso Bowling Center, posting 35 consecutive strikes before leaving a 6-pin on the final ball.

Meanwhile, Batavia right-hander Jason Quilliam posted his second 300 game in as many weeks, finding perfection once again in the middle game of a 676 series in the Mancuso Real Estate Doubles League at Mancuso Bowling Center on Monday night.

The previous week, he ended with 300 for a 781 series.

At Perry Bowling Center, Tim Grasby started with a spare before stringing 11 consecutive strikes for a 290 game in the Thursday Night League.

"I made a small adjustment after the first game, which was only 171, and from that point on, I couldn't miss," Quilliam said. "I got a break on the 11th ball, tripping a 9-pin."

At Oak Orchard Bowl in Albion, Robbie Hanks fired a 797 series in the Sneezy's Monday Night League, missing an 800 series when he left a 10-pin in the final frame. Later in the week, he continued his fine bowling with a 778 series in the Thursday Men's Triples League at Oak Orchard Bowl.

Wagner was looking to become the 37th kegler to post a United States Bowling Congress-certified 900 series, but his 899 is the highest three-game set in the nation this season (which runs from Aug. 1 through July 31).

Reflecting upon the achievement, Wagner, who has 43 perfect games, called it "an incredible experience."

"I made great shots and held my composure throughout and I will forever remember that moment. I don't think any other thing I do in bowling will compare to how awesome a moment that was, and I doubt I'll ever be as nervous bowling again as I was right there. So all things considered, I gave it one heck of a run."

Yesterday at Pinnacle Athletic Complex in Victor the Batavia Blue Devils indoor track squad set the bar higher with new personal records in multiple events.

Since announcing the start of the season in January the double-digit Section V squad for both boys and girls have had challenges to overcome.

Head indoor track Coach Nicholas Burk said “Our athletes have now been practicing for five weeks and we're just starting to see the results of consistent training. It takes time to see results from our workouts, but we're reaching that point of our season where our athletes times and performances are going to start improving.”

In a phone interview after the meet, Burk spoke about new rules with COVID-19 for student athletes, training and the outlook this season.

"We've been very fortunate for the opportunity to practice and honestly besides keeping small separate groups in practice, we've been able to have pretty consistent and productive training," the coach said. "We've been utilizing the weight room, Van Detta, the high school gyms, and running outside for practice.

"With approximately 80 athletes involved, we've had to use multiple locations to keep our groups small. We have two remaining league meets but are looking for some event specific meets to go to as well. Some of our pole vaulters went to a pole vault meet at Gates, and we're hosting a high jump/shot put meet this week.

"Sectionals is on March 7th and our girls’ team will be competing for their 17th Sectional Championship and our boys are looking for their 10th. We don't have all of the information for Sectionals yet, but we expect it will be a very tough meet with great competition. We'll keep working towards our goals try to be ready to compete March 7^th.
